Hey Burnt,
If you get knocked around much in the wind, Try my SS wing mod. I simply sandwiched two SS wings together to make a 100% symmetrical airfoil with a carbon arrow shaft for a spar (used some 2" white foam as 'ribs' btw. I took out all dihedral and added 1" ailerons along entire lenth. If you use 2" ailerons, they can give you extra lift when used as flaperons.

Anyway, The thing slices through wind like it wasn't even there and still floats very nicely. If I need to get down (or up) fast the symmetrical wing is just the ticket for this as well.

As a benefit for AP, the wing is SUPER strong with this mod. Here is the original thread I started for this mod, I called it the 'Sonic Stick'

Hey Quiet, that is pretty dang cool. I appreciate the info. I might make that a winter project. Buy a couple SS kits and make it it addition to the one I already have. The thing is, I have done a few mods to the one I already have. One biggie was I made mine into a tricycle landing gear. I fly mine in some incredible places. Gravel pits where it bouncing off of boulders, hayfields, lawns, you name it. Anyway, I got tired of it flopping forward and filling my electric motor full of dirt and debris. Tri gear completely took care of that problem. I also took the carbon main frame out and replaced it with aluminum. I drilled a couple little holes to mount my camera and landing gear and the stock one just started falling apart. Anyway, what I have now is a rock solid fly anywhere any time camera platform that is reliable, clean, works all the time, no mess, no stress, etc etc. I take it up to the alltitude I want, shut off the motor and just float around. Its straight up awesome.

Hi all'
If we are still going.
How can we stop wing flutter in high winds, have ailerons great for handling BUT will flutter with to much air speed.(the high wind is my problem).Have the sticky tape trick done still dose it not so bad.
What is the thoughts on this.

Hey Top,
I don't worry about the wing flutter. I get it too, and all I do is just slow down until it stops. One thing the ailerons do is increase the performance of the plane making it posssible to fly faster and handle much better in in WAY stronger winds. If my wings start to flutter I just cut back on my throttle until it smooths out. If I were to try to do something about the flutter, it would almost certainly add more weight to the plane and I don't want to do that. I want to fly slow anyways, the slower the better for AP.

Very cool, well if you're anything like me, your helis won't see much action action any more. In fact, I'm converting my heli into a video ship. I won't be using it much for snaps anymore but want to put a way better camera on it for video. I will try and get a couple pics of my landing gear for you today if I get a chance.

OK Top, Here you go. I'm sorry this took so long. Here is one with just the frame and electronics and another with the SS ready for action. Let me know if you have any questions. O yeah. The orange wing tips? They are my visual aids. Saved my bird many times.

My heli works great, but it's taking a far back seat now. This rig makes long range, tracking video of subjects about 100 times easier, safer, and cheaper. Not to mention a return to launch function.

I'll post some vid when I get the camera mount configured.

Looks great trackhead. Sure is a lot more fun than white knuckle heli flying huh?
I have a 6.1 MP camera on mine. If you look at my site every picture on it wads taken with my SS. Tower Hobbies, Horizon Hobbies, etc etc, almost every major online hobby store carries them. I warn you though, one you get one you'll be hooked. I take mine with me everywhere I go. For snapshots its simply the easiest way not to mention affordable way to go. I have 4 extras on hand just for parts. I was doing a shoot last week. I run my batteries dead before I land and then dead stick er in. Well, it just so happend that a car decided to take up my runway on final approach so I just floated my bird into some trees nearby. It hit and fell off branches all the way to the ground. Damage? None to electronics. Damaged wing. Threw a new one on. Total cost? Well the price of an entire kit is 31 bucks. So even if you figure half of that it cost me an astounding 18 bucks. What an efficient way to do AP. Its great.

You will have to convert it to a smaller compressed format, like WMV, publish on the web somewhere, and post a link to it here. Windows Media Encoder is a free tool that does a good job of converting video. Or you can just use YouTube. 16 minutes is too long, edit the video so it contains just the best bits, a minute would be good. Your camera should have come with some basic editing software.

I have a Sony DSC-T9 6.1 Megapixel camera. It weighs a whopping 5.5 ounces. My SS actually flies way better with the camera on it. I don't use my video downlink anymore. I've flown it so much now I know the exact angle and distance I need to get the shot even without a camera man. But even with the video downlink, my ship weighed in RTF at 33 ounces. The only time I ever use full power is on takeoff. I can rifle this sucker out of a spot you wouldn't believe. Once I'm up I am very conservative on my throttle. If I have a little breeze and use half throttle to climb when I need to I can stay up for a half hour sometimes longer. I get it up to the altitude I want just shut the engine off and float around and snap pictures. Its sweet.

Ok Burnt you now got me hooked. You HAPPY NOW

I'm running 2 gassers and know exactly what you mean about the stress. Specially in built up areas. I'v read this whole thread now, I have had a foamie long time ago not with a brushless system though but still need some advice on electrics. I see that you can get 3 different kits from tower hobbies. All are GWS one with a EPS-300C/BB the other with a EPS-400C/BB and the other as a glider. Is there anyone of them that I should get? Do you then put all your own electrics and motor into it? What would I need then and how much will this equipment cost? If you are using your own motor then why not just by the glider version?

On the photography side... how many photos do you take on average per shoot and what percentage of images can be used?
...and does the sony that you are using have shutter priority?

Sorry for the Q's but trying to find out if my clients are going to be happy with this change.

Regards
Jason

I just finished building a new planker. Took a 6' Telemaster wing and tail and modded it to an aluminum fuse. Weighs less than the stock Telemaster and works beautifully. It's hauling a 32 oz. payload no problem and getting very smooth, long tracking vid. Something I can't do with my heli.

I'm a fixed wing freak now, heli's are over rated for what I like to shoot.

OK, torque my brotha, you will not be sorry. I have several thousand dollars invested in my heli, and I have to tell you its a relief NOT to have to use it. I will still use it eventually but for snaps, I'm tellin you bro, this SS is a kick.
OK for starters, Order the Glider version. Why? Because you will not be using the landing gear that comes with the full kit so save a few bucks and get the glider version. they are a collosal 18 bucks at Tower. And get several of them, for 2 reasons. They are almost never in stock, and then you will have extra parts. Oh by the way, the stupid specs say it comes with an aliminum boom and thats litterally a chinese joke, no matter what you order it will come with a fiberglass boom. Not to worry, we will make our own form some aliminum from Home depot. If you look at the very first post in this thread it lists every electrical component I use. I trigger my camera with a switch on my transmitter. When I get lined up with my target and am ready to shoot, I simply flip this switch and it goes through a programable device called a "Vision Lock" from Spartan. I can program the vision lock to adjust the throw on the servo, the speed of the servo, the epa of the servo, dude you name it it does it. I have mine programed to take a snap every second. I just did a shoot for a Realtor here this morning. I was in the air for maybe 20 minutes. I have a 2 gig memory stick capable of 800 snaps at full resolution. I was able in that time to take 118 pictures from EVERY concievable angle of the property. I just go in circles around and filp the camera swith when I get lined up. Now I HAVE TO SAY, THIS TAKES PRACTICE!! I do NOT USE A CAMERA MAN!! I went out and found a house that I could practice on and flew over that bad boy 50 different times. I would have my laptop handy and slam the memory card into it and view my progress right on location. This is how I learned to do this without having to have somone to run the camera. I am to the point now where I know EXACTLY where I need to be to get the shot.
I can only say this about the electronics. Go brushless. The engine I use is simply amazing. I can take off out of a property that is surrounded by trees, and this baby will go almost vertical. Its airborne so quick its scary. I fly in LOW around a lot of trees, you need raw power to pull out of certain situations and brotha this engine does it. You CANNOT fly this bird full power for very long, it simply is not made for speed and the wings have so much surface area that they start to flutter. I use the power to take off and get out of tight situations but when I'm doing a shoot its about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle.
Tires. I found these tires at my local yocal hobby shop in Anchorage. They are Dubros. BUT They say 'super light" on them. They aren't kidding. They are light as a feather. I run 2 1/2 inch all the way around. I take off ad land on some rough stuff. Gravel hayfields, lawns, you name it, and these tires ROCK!
Enough for now I have to run a cd over to a Realtor. Let me know if you have any more questions and I will answer them if I can. Torque, all I can say is, you will wonder why you waited so long.
