Crank case temps and too lean - is there a direct relationship??
I have an OS hyper 50 in my raptor and am running 10% nitro ( I know it is an insult to a hyper but nitro is VERY expensive down here) and 18% cool power oil with a zimmerman muffler. It idles very smmothly and has good pick up from idle . The low speed needle is rotated lean to the 4 oclock position when viewed with the heli horizontal. The engine is almost totally cool on the crank case. I leaned out the main to just 7/8 of a turn open and the engine is still very cool(can easily hold my finger on the side of the cylinder) It was running well until the last flight when it suddenly quit just going through the vertical in a loop. Even though the engine was always very cool - is it likely that I leaned the main too much and that caused the engine to just suddenly stop??? I checked - plenty of fuel and no leaks in the lines and glow plug is good. Has any one had this sort of problem? With my old TT 50 it would always get very hot before quitting because of being too lean

You want to put your finger on the backplate, if its cool the motor isnt too lean, check your clunk lines.Andy

Either it is too lean , or there is a glow plug problem. Did you use that snottty stuff to seal the exhaust? If so remove the plug and check for material in the glow coil element.
If the engine stops running with no rich/lean indications ,this usually is the culprit( glow problem)

Even for 10% nitro those needle positions sound pretty far off from the factory recommendations. The idle is usually between 2 o-clock and 3-oclock, with the main needle between 1.25 and 1.5 turns out from closed (more with higher nitro). Less than 1 turn out on the main needle is asking for trouble.

Did you check your engine temps immediately after fast flights or just after hovering? Unless you check after flights that asked for >75% throttle, you're not really checking the effect of the high-speed needle.
