430XL temperature?
I just finished my first 3 flights on my newly built 450SE V2. Flies great with absolutely no vibrations whatsoever, it's beautiful. Using Align 2100mah 22C batteries, the stock Align 35G ESC and the stock 430XL motor. 12 tooth pinion. 2100RPM headspeed. Stock Align CF blades.

After 3 flights, 3 minutes each, (going easy on batteries for first few flights), I landed, and checked the temperature on the back of the motor, it was 130F. I got the reading using a non-contact laser thermometer.

Is 130F reasonable? Too hot? I'm not sure if my gear mesh is too tight or not.

I don't think that temp is too much... But you can still check to see if your heli is draging anywhere. Check the belt and main shaft... make sure everything is spinning free. Also, check the gear mesh on the motor. Should be a very small amount of backlash.

it should only be that hot after 2800+RPM and 3d. my 430l when running 2300Rpms never even gets warm.

From what I understand the 430XL does run a little hotter than the 430L so I don't know if comparing the two is valid.

I do have a small amount of backlash, but almost none. Everything is super super smooth though. Main shaft, tail belt, tail shaft.

I don't see any dragging anywhere... my only concern is the mesh between the motor and the main gear. I think it's good, maybe a tiny bit on the tight side, but if I make it any less tight, then the other side of the gear is too loose, so this is a compromise. I'm trying to use the motor temperature as a gauge of an acceptable mesh.

Can anyone else confirm 130F is okay or not okay? Definitely not 3D, just hovering on this new battery, 3 minutes at a time.

You have to step down to 11T pinion. Your motor temp shouldn't go above 120*F at that low a head speed if you have the right pinion. Doing this will also increase your flight time as the current draw will be lower.

BTW for that high a kv rated motor you should set high timing and quick throtle response on Align ESC. I find the current draw lesser that way and the motor runs cooler. I know the instruction says otherwise, but having tried different settings on mine, the setting I stated earlier provides the best balance of power, efficiency, and flight time on the the stock Align power system. I also run mine in governor mode.....

Shouldn't your headspeed be a lot higher than 2100 with 430Xl/12T? What is your throttle curve?

I think he had it toned down for easy flying. But if low HS is desired smaller pinion is required so the motor doesn't struggle and get hot.

Low headspeed is not desired in the long run, I want to get to at least 2800 over the next few days, I just want to go really easy on the batteries at first. That's why I put the 12t pinion in because I do want faster headspeeds.

So maybe at this temporarily-low speed on a 12t pinion, the temp is normal? If I run it at 2800RPM you're saying it'll get colder?
