Anyone have a backyard helipad?
I have started to fly my Raptor 50 Titan in my back yard. We have a little over an acre and back onto 100 acres of wetland so the danger issue is minimised. However, I get patches of dead grass from raw fuel at startup so I was thinking of either a permanent or temporary helipad in the yard. It would be great to see how others have gone about this. My thought was either some kind of square astroturf mat, or maybe a square of paving slabs (with a big H in a circle of course).

i was using my snowmachine trailer. its 8x12. i had a few close calls though cause the tie down spots stick up and like to catch skids and also the wood is really slick. so i quit using.

I have 20 acres I just use the grass
I got a small table to start it on and that keeps the fule off the ground.I fold the table up after use.

I do use a 3x3 pad to protect my lawn. It's a good idea I think. Because prior to using it, I had dead spots all over the backard. The question is can I land on the pad doing inverted auto.Just do it.

Don't have one since I live in a subdivision, but I have been thinking of building a "mobile heli pad" that will fit in the back of my Tahoe and I can drop anywhere I pull over and decide to fly.

Take a look at my gallery and see the heli pad I built for taking to the field or a spot where there is a lot of dirt. It keeps the heli off the dirt.

just hit wallmart or Sams and grab a heavy 4x6 industrial door mat, they are about $20 but you won't blow them away and you can easily hit it. or get a muffler that doesn't blow the exhaust down! I currently use a KSJ pipe so I no longer burn the grass.

exhaust deflector
i use my exhaust deflector and turn it up away from the lawn, it works good till i have to clean off the helli. but it saves the lawn and no extra equipment to haul around or leave. if i were to put an landing pad they would use it for a full size because they tried to put one in bc were so close to the expressway where there a car wreck everyday. we however fought this and won cause their are alot of kids that live in the neighborhood, but every time i fire up the helli the kid are there to watch at a safe distance.Trex600n Trex500 Mikado LoGo5003d// Hacker, CastleCreations,Ys 50, JR 7703d/8900, Radix

I use a plywood pad that is cut to fit in my truck bed in a way that it won't go past the wheel wells. Has eye hooks on one side to hold my heli during transport and is blue on the reverse side to fly from. I also have a piece of 1/2" white plastic that I use at my home field to keep the dead spots away. Since it doesn't rot it stays out year round.

Bxc53 - show off!

I went out and bought some recycled rubber floor covering at lunch time and plan to mount it to a hardboard backing to provide a 4' square pad. For now I will store it under the deck and throw it out on the lawn for flying. Later on I may even make it a permanent landing deck at the end of the yard. Now, what to paint it with?

When i lived on the river i used to cast of with my Helis and my strimmer on board.(could not fly inverted then) Tie up at a suitable field (national Trust Land).
Strim a patch and fly all day then cruise back to base in the evening.
Live in a house now and tried hovering in the garden but her indoors.
Put a stop to that due to the staining. Regular club flyer now.

do they give u a hard time for burned grass from ur exhaust deverter ? but i guess u never have to worry about the tall grass, like i do on the farm the wheat is 3' or so and won t cut it till 6-8'. i dont like it much. the field i belong to just started a new field but it close to the other one so only dsm2 at that one but its great because it use to be a 9 hole course so i am looking forward to it.Trex600n Trex500 Mikado LoGo5003d// Hacker, CastleCreations,Ys 50, JR 7703d/8900, Radix

My backyard heli pad, no grass but the canyons to fly down in is a real blast.

Gotta get one of those hard mats to keep the heli out of the dirt. I used to have a blanket held down by rocks, but one day it decided to wrap itself around the tail of my R50 at the time and did some damage.Still buyin' and flyin' then crashing and cryin'
