Shredding Main Gears on 10s?
Hey Guys -

On occasion with my current 8s setup (TP 5000-6SX pack in series with a TP 5000-2SX pack), I'm prone to strip a main gear with the incredible torque the NEU 1910/1Y/H motor is capable of producing. I'm running the 14T Mikado pinion and the power is great. I'm thinking of switching to a 10S setup using 2x TP 3850-5SX packs in series and the NEU 1910/1Y/H on a 11T Mikado pinion. Is this setup going to strip main gears even more?

Is it common to strip the main gears with 10s? I'm not the smoothest with my collective control and I do like hard climbouts, so I'm wondering if 10s may be too much for my flying style.

Thanks!

10s
the battery is not the problem nor is the operator, its just a plastic gear that was originaly designed for 6s and 1650kv motors.

After alot of testing the 'freaks' seem to believe the 8s setup is the best over all.

same weight as a 6 cell setup

10s is awesome but there's extra weight to pack around.

I assume you have the new neu (sounds funny) that is capable of 10s operation , the black version is limited to 8s as the kv and 8s puts it at max rpm (30k) on 10s it would be too fast.

I wonder fow he neu one will do on 10s .. would need a small pinion to make work (would make it easier to tear up that main though !!!)

Nah, you shouldnt strip it with that setup, ive tried even stronger setups without issues.

Check your gearmesh, it need to be PERFECT, use cigarett paper or something very thin.

I just busted my third main gear in flight (with perfect mesh) and I'm on 6s. But I'm a crappy pilot with a Neu motor.

Helical or Straight cut? Honestly, the only times I have stripped my main gears during flight are when I had a loose gear mesh. It sounds to me that your gear mesh is still a little too loose. I am using a Neu 1515.2y with a 10S setup and have not stripped a gear (except for the time I did try to loosen the gear mesh).

If you try that method of using a piece of paper/plastic in between the gears and it is still causing you to strip your gears, I'd recommend you not use it and just line it up. After I tighten up the motor mount bolts, I check to see if there is a little bit of play in between the gear and the pinion. Usually, there is a very tiny amount of play, just enough to hear a bit of a "click" and to allow the gear to spin the pinion freely without binding. I'll bet if I used the plastic method, I'd probably have a difficulty time threading it into the gear mesh.

Straight cut gears, but on inspection the problem is in the exact same spot on two of the gears. Possibly a mfg problem.Treat me good, I'll treat you better. Treat me bad, I'll treat you worse.

Carl,

What pinion are you using? I'm using a Mikado pinion which seems a much better fit, mesh-wise, than the stock Align. The Mikado or the RevCo pinions are much stronger and mesh better than the stock pinion.

Like Mr. Mel said , "perfect mesh" is the key....Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

Like Shawn and Mel say, gear mesh is the key for 10s sucess. I've been using a tip I got from Finless a while ago and it has worked perfectly. Use a strip of an Align plastic parts bag to set the mesh. Since doing this, I have not had any signficant main gear wear with either 10t mikado/170 or 13t/188 helical 10s 600 setups.

Also, make sure you use a slow startup and low throttle response on your esc. This helps a lot too.

Cheers,
Tom C

I will concede I have yet to achive "perfect mesh" as I have yet to have a perfectly round main gear. I do however, try to achive the best possible mesh on the high side of the gear. I still find it a strange coincidence it is the exact same teeth on both gears which broke.
I am using an Align pinion but will try a Mikado soon per your reccommendations.
