Arianna Perez Benefit Fun Fly June 23-24, 07 Milford Lake, KS
Guys and Gals:

This is very un-orthodox for me. I do not like to ask for help, not even when I was learning to fly, but this hit too close to home.

June 23-24, 2007 at the Milford RCers Aerodrome, in Fabulous Milford Lake, KS

I am preparing a fun fly to benefit my Niece, Arianna Perez. She was born with a defect that left her right leg quite a bit shorter than the left leg. For the surgery / procedure, my sister and my mom have travelled from Puerto Rico to Maryland 3 times in the last 2 years. Up unitl now, my brother-in-law's medical insurance has paid all the medical bills. All we had to pay was the plane tickets and the hotel stay in Maryland.

Arianna went thru a bone enlargement procedure last year on the lower leg. All went fine. And she's home recovering with her leg in a cast. This year, she will have to go back and start the procedure to enlarge the upper leg. The doctors told my sister that they would prefer if they stayed in Maryland for the length of the procedure, that is about 6 months.

So I'm trying to pull of the strings that I know of to collect some money to help pay for the plane tickets, and the hotel stay. And in the event that the medical insurance runs dry.

Please send me a PM or e-mail me at rafael.flores01 at gmail.com (remove the spaces and the at) if you have any questions.

Hey Rafael. It looks like Scott is going to be in Mexico for work that weekend, but I'd like to send a donation. Could you add an address or something for people who would like to do that?

Thanks.

Hey Jacki:

Nice to see you here under another name, not the same as Scott's.

I am working on a website to continue the fund raising campaing. This is just one event of a few, going on in Puerto Rico and on my end. Last year they had a baseball game and I thought that a Fun Fly would be a good idea.

For those of you that can't make it, I'll publish the website address when it's ready to be published. I'm looking at hosting services and domain name registration. Lizzie is also looking into the "legalese" of opening a bank account here or in Puerto Rico for this purpose.

Thanks for your kind offers.

Ryan: what would you like to know? Just send me an e-mail to Rafael.flores01 at gmail.com (replace the at and remove the spaces)or a PM here.

As far as being a heli specific event, no, I have announced it in various websites and thru various clubs. I want the maximum exposure possible. But I can add that more than 95% of my R/C friends are heli pilots.

Thanks to all and Update
A little update from this weekend: (7/2/07)
My mom called Lizzie late sunday and she said that Arianna had fallen playing outside and she fractured her upper leg (femur). They called the doctor and there is basically two options, since the femur is already broken, they could fly to Maryland right now and start the procedure of enlarging the bone. The other option is to let it heal and leave the procedure as scheduled for next year. There are some pros and cons for each option that I don't fully understand yet. My sister and her husband are pondering on the options and shoiuld make a decision in the next few hours if they haven't made the decision yet.

For those of you interested, The totals are as follows:

We had 22 registered pilots.
The Raptor 30 ARF went to Rene Rivera, a lucky local resident that knows nothing about RC, but was pretty excited to have won the helicopter.
There were some donations coming in from local entities after the event, but the last count was over $2800.

Thanks to all that came to the event and those who sent your donation even when you could not come.

Another Update: 7/4/07

My sister decide not to go ahead with the procedure this year. Arianna will spend a few months in a cast that starts at her chest and goes to below the knee on one leg and just above the knee on the other leg.

The reasons for not going ahead with the procedure were these:
1. The doctor could not "guarantee" that by making the procedure now they were going to achieve the lenght they are aiming for. He suggested that leaving the bone to heal, and doing the procedure next year the lenghtening would be greater than now.
2. My sister knows what is to be bumped out of a surgery, and after spending some time with the patients in that hospital last year, she wouldn't want to casue a "bump" to one fo those kids.

See you all later and thanks for keeping up with the current events.
