It looks to be an onboard glow igniter. You can set them up so that the glow plug is receiving power depending on the throttle position. Typical setup will include the glow plug receiving power at lower throttle positions while at higher throttle positions the plug does not need to be powered. It's a bit of a safety net that has prevented flame outs etc etc...it also elimates the need for attaching a glow igniter. Most of these units contain there own batteries. This one looks like it pulls off your flight pack.
Bit of a contraversial issue in a heli. If they are not installed properly; radio interference can be troublesome....

i have one mounted on my 1.40 sized pattern plane with the YS 140DZ, and it is a dream. You bring the throttle down to idle, and wait a few moments, and crank! Poof the motor is ready for flight.

Peace Out,
Steve

I think I rember seeing an electrical diagram on a site where you could fix your own. Anybody seen this ? Link please.
I think the one I saw took up its own channel and you could just designate a switch on the radio
