Tail Skid?? Do you mean a tail fin??

You can make a copy of the original out of1/8 ply, sure.

Be sure to use a fuel proof sealer.

A piece of spring steel wire bent to shape will work. A couple of loops in the wire, some 2.5 mm bolts, and some washers. Drill the fin. Try making the skid by doubling the wire at the tip of the skid (bend it back on itself. That way you don't have a sharp point on the wire, and it has two wires instead of one.

I've also used little wheels, which are kind of fun. Get an airplane tail wheel, and bend up a wire to hold it, and bolt to your tail. It looks a little goofy, but I like that. Sure is fun to drag is through the grass when you auto.

Thanks, John Cadwell

Try a Popsicle stick
When I was flying off of a gravel road, I kept breaking tail blades until I lashed a popsicle stick to my tail fin. Just drill a series of small holes in the stick and fin, then "sew" the stick on with fine wire. With the extra inch, I can bang my tail anywhere I want to!

Here's how I do it,

Use a small brass tube that I cut open along it's entire length (using Dremel cut disk).

The cut must be a bit less wide that the thichness of the vertical fin.

Then, I form the skid itself with a small wire.
After, I solder the wire to the brass tube, clean up and paint.

Installation requires only to slide the assembly onto the front of the fin.

Optionnaly if the fin does not have a ridge
on the front (Vario's fins do have a ridge) add a bit of glue.

tail wheel
I have seen Cadwells tail wheel, and while it does in fact look very out of place, it works great. Hey, for even more fun, we should put axels on the skids, and put wheels there, too. Might make for some GREAT sliding autos!

Another thing is if you cut your own tail fin.. just cut an extension built in tail skid. look like my benzin, so you won't have to add other extra hardware to the fin.

I'm sure that one time or another we have crashed (not me it was the grounds fault fo being so close ) But why not use an old piece of fin cut out to the shape you need if there is enough left. At least it's already fuel proof and the color will match the new fin. After reading this post I think that I will try it myself and post pics after I make it.
