all thumbs
I recently started flying again. I started out along time ago flying with my thumbs only. I see most top pilots flying with there thumbs and fingers on the sticks. ive been trying that on the sim. seems to be a little more precise. Whats everyone think? stick with thumbs or practice thumb and fingers.
2nd place is the first loser.

You might do a quick search using key words like "Thumbs and Pinch." I'm pretty sure there have been some topics on this. That said, I learned pinch from the start and prefer that, though I often get sloppy and use thumbs only, or even my chin at times...

I flew planes for almost a year with thumbs then flew helis with thumbs for about 6 months. I started doing the "Pinch" about three months ago. It took some time to get used to it and now I cant do just thumbs unless my fingers are very close by. I was told by a bystander that my fingers sometimes dont even touch the gimbals. The learning process was made more difficult because I removed my flybar weights and removed all expo around the same time I started with the pinch. NOT A GOOD IDEA!

I have to agree...it is more precise IMO.

When I first started practicing on the G3, I was using 2 fingers, but I found myself using 3 when flying my Cal 30. Don't know why, but I was just doing it. After playing with the radio on the sim and my Futaba, I found that with 3 I was limiting my movement. If I had to make large control inputs, 3 fingers got in the way. Although it felt comfortable, I made an effort just to fly with 2 fingers. It's helpled out a lot in my flying!!

While flying planks, I always used thumbs. I honestly don't ever remember even trying to fly when pinching (2 fingers). With heli's, it just makes more sence to me to pinch. You have to be so much more precise, so 2 fingers worth of input is better than one, plus you have counted out the accidental thumb sliding off the control deal, which I have done many times while flying a plank!

Mess around with your sim (if you have one) and find what's more comfortable for you. If you don't have a sim, trust me when I say spend the money on one, as it will save you more money than you can imagine!!!!!

Hope this helps!

Rick

I fly using the "Pinch " method, I feel like I get a more "direct" feel on the sticks. I tried the thumb method too, yet it felt almost sloppy in a sense. But by all means use whichever method feels natural for you.

Try all the methods and pick the one that's best for you. As you said some do it different.

I fly with two fingers, but... my thumb is more on top. That way if I need the quick thumb movement I momentarily fly thumb only.

I've adapted that method after I broke my right hand. Some quick movements make my hand ache or stress it. By avoiding the movements with thumb only I have no problems.
