how do those power on and power off stalls feel on a sim? also how about sustained 60 degree turns?

Today I was pretty wound up about this thread. I was so confident that I would be able to fly, that I just had to find out for myself. I went to my local airport, and asked for a flight with an instructor. I explained to my instructor that I have been fling on flight simulator for 10 years or so, and that I feel I have learned enough with the sim to try flying without his instructon. He agreed to let me see what I can do. We are going to use a C150.

After looking over the entire plane, and going threw the checklist, of which, I knew what everything was, and how to check it, we started our taxi. The instructor let me taxi myself, with no input from him. I found taxing the hardest part of the whole thing. Turning the plane, and using the breaks was a learning curve. I did catch on though.

After our taxi, it was time for take off. Again, the instructor let me do everything, rudder inputs and all. I increased the throttle to full, and started rolling. It was a bit of work to keep the plane centered, but my performance must of been acceptable, there was no input from the instructor. Rotation at 50, and take off around 60. I then proceded to climb up to 2500 feet.

At this point, the instructor told me to do some 30 degree bank turns, and 10 degree positive and negative climbs/decents. this is where i totally agree with you When I did the 10 degree decent, I had a bit of a problem with the negative G force. My body didn't like that feeling. I proceded to ask my instructor if that was around 0 G's, and he said "not even close". He asked me if I wanted to feel 0 g's. I was very reluctant, but chose to try it. I think my nuts ramed into my head at this point!!! You are TOTALLY correct here, NOTHING matches that feeling! I totally underestimated what you, and everyone else was saying. There truly is NOTHING that feels like that.

Anyways, we got over the whole 0 G thing, and did some streight and leval flight, and a 60 degree turn. The 60 degree turn I was ok with. the positive g's on my body were not a problem for me. After me feeling the airplane out a bit more, and getting more used to it. it was time to land.

Again, I asked the instructor to let me do the work, and only correct me, or take over if there was going to be a problem. He was telling me where to fly to get into the pattern of the airport. This is something that you DO NOT learn using flight simulator. He needed to help me for this, but he didn't touch the controls.

I then started my final approach. There was 16km winds on about a 30 degree angle from the runway, not a big deal. I brought the plane completely in myself, controlling everything, throttle and rudder included, and landed the plane totally myself. I was about 1 foot away from a perfect centerline landing. The landing was amazing in my eyes, as I did it, totally myself, with no input or advice from the instructor.

So there you go. This is 100% true. I am not streaching the truth at all. I totally did this myself, by training on MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR.

Can someone fly a plane right off the bat using flight simulator only as training?:
Well, I did it today. I know there was an instructor, but I didn't require any of his help for the operation of the plane.

Does flight simulator give you the 'feeling' of flight?:
NOT AT ALL, NOTHING EVEN CLOSE! But if you can get over the feeling, you will be able to fly.

Comments from my instructor:
"You need to get over using the gauges, and start learning to fly the plane visually. You are too attached to the gauges from using the simulator."

"That was the best landing I have ever seen from a student with no landing training, let alone NOT having me to guide you in."

aarinsingh, I appreciate what you have did. Because of this 'topic', I have now started traing towards my recreational licence. If it wasn't for this thread, I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing now. I now have one hour of flight time towards my rec licence.

I cannot describe how mad I was about this from. the one quote you said really got me wound.
Now there is a stupid statement.
. That made me so mad, that I had to try this in real life.

That being said, I now think you are the greatest person on RunRyder for forcing me to get into flying. It has been something I've wanted to do for as long as I can remember, but never did.

Glad you went out and tryed it. Even better that your hooked. Just remember, with flying every time you think you really have a handle on the whole thing, it has a way of humbling you. Of course you will never be bored.

i think you misinterpreted the reasoning he said "now that was a stupid comment"

you can teach a monkey how to fly a plane straight and level and to bank left and right ... reading the instruments isnt exactly rocket science either ...

i think its the way you came across saying you could "hop in and solo off the bat" ...

flight sim will teach you how to fly around and the basics about reading the instruments ... but its not going to teach you the things you need to know to save your life ...

its not going to teach you about stalls/spins and recovery techniques ... its not going to teach you about the systems of the aircraft and why/how everything is working and how to deal with emergencies ... its not going to teach you navigation and lost procedures

if you dont have all this stuff down the last thing you should be is comfortable with soloing ... i can tell you this from experience ... i had an electrical systems failure on my second solo cross country about 45 miles away from my home airport ...

im not sure what the crosswind component is for that cessna but landing with a steady 8mph crosswind is a lot different from landing when the wind is 90 degrees off the nose gusting to 17 knots ...

confidence is good but too much confidence is what will kill you ...

dont get me wrong im not trying to take anything away from you ... sounds like you did really good ... did you go up today just to see what it was like or are you planning on training and gettiny your license ?

did you go up today just to see what it was like or are you planning on training and gettiny your license ?
I went today to see what it was like. I went to see if I actually could do what I thought I could do. Again, I was able to, and from my understanding, I did quite well.

Because of me going today to 'see what its like', it has made me totally catch the bug. I am now going training towards a recreational licence. Later, I will probably go for my private. But due to the money situation, I'm going to stick with recreational for now.

Again, I felt that I would be able to land and take off the plane myself, which I did. But I sure did get my eyes opened to the forces involved. I never expected them to be anywares NEAR as great as they were.
