hey guys, i went out to fly today and my gyro never went to a solid red. my buddies 401 did that one time and he just unpluged and restarted and it worked, but i restarted my some 5 times and nothing. i unhooked it from my jr 790 and that didn't do anything, i mean its like it just went bad all of a sudden, it worked fine on my last flight.

?

Usually means you aren't getting a signal on the single wire, do you have it oriented correctly? If you are using JR and had to shave the connector its possible to connect it backwards.

I have the same problem. I turn on my transmitter first then the heli. The 401 blinks quick then goes to a slow poll blink. It never goes solid. Is that normal?

no.

the 401 MUST !!!!! be initialized in HH mode. Your slow blink
indicates that it's starting in N mode. You'll need to
reverse the switch that the yellow wire is on (usually channel 5
but YMMV)

When I throw the switch to get the 401 to go solid my tail rotor doesn't center itself anymore. I have to center it myself. Meaning the rotor doesn't follow my stick movements when I let it go.
Sorry, but does that make any sense?

You can find the manual in PDF format to your gyro at this link:

http://www.futaba-rc.com/manuals/index.html

Scroll down to toward the bottom until you find GY401....

Thats the way all heading hold gyros behave.

A heading hold gyro gives the command to turn, since the helicopter is sitting on your coffee table it doesnt turn so the gyro patiently holds the tail blades there waiting for the helicopter to obey. Turn the tail of the helicopter and you will see the servo recenter itself and then correct the other way if you move the tail farther than the gyro told it to go.

Rate mode just dampens the rate of unwanted tail movement.

the 'lack of centering' you are seeing when in HH mode
is PERFECTLY NORMAL. That is how HH behaves when on the ground.

Believe me, it does the 'right thing' when in the air.

As a matter of fact, that lack of centering is THE easy way of
telling that you're in HH mode on gyros that do not have a mode LED

Thanks BarracudaHockey and z11355!!

Just learned something new. I wagged the tail and saw the tail rotor blades compensate for the movement. So now I have it in HH mode.

Just wondering what is N mode, the one that I was on that made the 401 blink? Is that used for 3d movements?
