Yesterday, I still think that a backup heli is not necessary and is a waste of money. It is not until today that I do not agree with myself. My primary bird is finally down awaiting parts from RonLund. If it were not the backup bird, I would have wasted the Thanksgiving holidays. Also, my backup bird allows me to perform some troubleshooting on my primary bird. For example, I have a bad tail, and I do not know if the gyro has gone bad or the tail servo. Plugging the bad equipment in suspect to the backup heli, I know the answer right a way.

I call them the EVO Twins. I bring the both out every weekend and when one goes in I fly the other. I also stock enough replacement parts to rebuild them both in case they both decide to take a dive.

Fly during the day and rebuild at night.

I have a pair of twins now.
Two 50's set up identical, and 2 near identical 90's. One standard frame and one a carbon frame SE. In both cases, I went to the troble of configuring electronics setups to be identical.

I have 2 Raptor 50's but I find that I fly the older one a lot more. Mostly 'cause I am scared of destroying my new one.

Hey dgshaffer,

what are you waiting for? What better reason to go out and buy a new truck or car or suv or even a featherlite? I'm sure the wife will understand.

I'm wishing for a backup helicopter right now... had a case of dumb thumbs while doing a stall turn yesterday and my LHS didn't have all the parts I need in stock Now I'm grounded on probably the best flying day of the week and everything is closed

If it moves but shouldn't, duct tape. If it doesn't, but should, WD-40

If you're serious about flying, a backup heli(s) are essential.

You go to the field all excited to spend the whole day. You go up in one piece but comes down in few. Now you are twiddling your thumb or sucking whild watching your buddies fly with sad puppy dog eyes full of envy.

What do you do?

1. Just brush off the crash (worry about it when you get hom) and pull out your 2nd or 3rd bird and fly.
Go home semi happy you flew all day.

2. Start packing up when sun is still rising. Uttering some swear words that you do not want to repeat in front of your kids as you leave the field with sense of emptiness.

Which do you prefer?

I made my 50 titan the backup to my stinger 90, then when I crashed the 90, I took out the 50, and crashed it the next day... I need to learn to slow down. So 2 birds down, then I got an old XCell 60 to play with, practice some basics, then I just got a synergy, great deal couldn't pass it up.

Now, I have 4 down birds, waiting for parts.

The voices in my head can beat up the voices in your head.

I have had triplets at one point, and found it was a bit of overkill. Now I still bring three or four helis to the field, but only two are identical. WHen I had three, I spent a lot of time trying to make them fly identically, and would often forget what I had done to each, as three is tough to keep track of. Now I bring two Raptor 50s, a TREX 450 and a TREX 600. I leave the turbine at home since I cant afford to crash it! (If anyone wants to buy it, I'll make you a good deal!)

I also found that having absolutely heli support in the area
My state of depression by having a broken chopper, turned into alot of $40 express overnighted $10 heli- parts just did not seem to add up.I am sure I am the only one that has ever felt this way.But blue skies and helicopters in milk crates are not good for the soul!!!
