I am still troubleshooting the tail authority issue. I can hover only 5 seconds and afterwards the heli loses tail control and goes pirouetting. I check the tail with the heli landed, and I have control over it. After replicating the problem a couple of times, I finally see that actually the tail gets locked out at one point and then for some reason it gets unlocked and returns to normal operation. Also, this lock out only happens when the engine is on. FYI- I am using GY401 and a HiTec tail servo.

So, is this caused by the bad gyro or the bad tail servo?

manually twist your servo arm to it's full extents and be sure there's not a tooth missing on one of your servo gears...also make sure that you don't have a bent tail shaft.

Nix the hitec and get a 9253 or 54

Also immediately check the temp of the servo when it starts acting up, the 401 is hard on servos.

Yes, it is the bad servo
I just take the HiTec servo in suspect off the boom. While still connecting to the gyro, I share it vigorously to simulate the vibration during the heli's in flight. Yes, the servo gets locked out.

I had this exact same problem with my 45SE. I tried everything to fix it, and learned a couple of things. Firstly, there have been several people who have had this problem as the result of the tail drive pullys having gears that slip on the shaft when they get warm. The result is that they can hover for a few seconds, them WHAMO! the tails lets go. -This was NOT my problem. I changed both pullys, went outside and had the same failure. The good news is, before the next flight, I replaced the part that was the cause of the problem. The bad news is that it was the 401. After I swapped it out, I never had the problem again. I shipped the bad unit off to Hobby Services, and have not heard back yet, but I am hoping for a warranty repair.

Good luck.

Jetcopter,

Yeah, I also worry that it is the bad gyro, but not the servo. So I arrange another experiment by plugging the servo to another GY401 of my backup heli. I repeat the same experiement by shaking the servo vigorously a few times, and I get it locked out.

if you are running 4.8 to 5.3v on the gyro its good but 6.0v or more is no good.or voltage too low is also no good.
