Shopping for a standby genset and want to know if the brushless is something I should insist on haveing. Looking at a Generac Gaurdian 15000, for about 3,500 new. But the Honda 6000 watt (portable) brushless nearly as much. Is it that big a deal to go brushless? THanks for your help Mike

A brushless unit will not wear out as quickly as a brushed unit. In a brushless unit, the stator is the coil and the rotor is the permament magnet field. This is basically an alternator without brushes. The basic drawback to this design is that the stator HAS to be a permament magnet rather than using a set of field windings for the stator (magnetic field).

Thanks,,,,so tell me this. Is it such a differene that the smaller 6000 watt genset (I would be running it at 80% most of the time) is more desirable than the 15,000 watt set (ran at 25%) is (that's more than double the wattage!!!). I plan to run it for an average of 3 weeks per year. Not contiuous but we lose power for tht amount of time thru the winter. HAPPY T-DAY

Depends on whether or not you are using the generator to power your entire house. If this unit is to be a "whole-house" system, get the biggest unit that you can find. I have a friend that uses the Generac, and it works flawlessly. Make sure that you install a transfer switch before trying to use it. If you are using a generator, and are using the house wiring to deliver the power, the power company may not hook your paower back up unless you have a transfer switch (a safety thing).
