Whilst screwing on my Raptor 50 fan I noticed metal shavings coming from the fan as I screwed it on. It is not cross threaded as it happened when it was almost fully screwed on. Has anybody come across this problem before?

Yep, it was the fan at fault, it is not actually from the threads but from the bore of the fan being to small.

Either drill the bore out (what i did) or get the fan replaced.

I have managed to screw the fan all the way on and it seems OK. Do you think it would be ok to use?

If its the first time you mounted a fan on that crank shaft it could just be machining debris.

Not to sur if its a new fan but it is a new engine. Do you think it will be still good to use?

Paul, the reference by 'PaulJC', is to the clutch. they almost always need to be set using a dial indicator, like this.

Paul, what are you referring to, as you cant change the fan only in balance.. and i'm not sure the stock TT fan has enough mass, to be far enough out to effect vibration/resonance issues.

finally getting around to putting in the engine and fan!

Now I'm using the raptor technique assembly guide and it suggests to check the balance of the fan and clutch with a high point balancer, I do not have this and was wondering if its an absolute necessity to do?

No , you might get lucky without doing it .

You've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?

Seriously , if you haven't got the equipment , just put it together . If it vibrates , then you'll have to go back and check stuff , but the chances are it will be fine .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .
