Has anyone flown the new spectra G3 with open tail, and if so, is it dependable and safe. I have a friend that reads alot on these types of issues and he has heard that the open tail is not suited for the gasser G3. I also heard that the G26 motor is not the motor for this heli and I should put the G23 in its place. Any ideas or thoughts on this heli and any upgrades that have come out. I am in the process of building it now and wouold appreciate any inputs.
Thanks in advance!

Here for a good time, not a long time!

What about the open tail box. I also heard that if you send back the open tail box that they will send back a closed one in it's place. I would like to get the open one back but with the metal gears. Does anyone know what they will send back?
Thanks

The Spectra has known issues with the open gear box because of vibration. Miniature now kits the Spectra with the closed gear box. In fact if you purchase an open gear box new the package specifically states for glow use only.

Why would an open gearbox verses closed gearbox have anything to do with vibration. That seems very odd.

The current version of the open box is quite OK to use ; I have it on one of my G's...
Only disadvantage I've noticed is that a tail-blade-touching-the-ground incident will occasionally take out a tail gear as well as a bevel gear , never had a tail gear damaged in the closed boxes in all the years I've been using them ....

Closed box is the sure bet
Mine came with a closed box (bought it last year) and I haven't had anything fly off that. I think the original open tail box the tail shaft would break or something like that.

As far as the motor, I've been using a G26 in mine. Its a Hanson modified G26, (NOT stock!) and it seems to work pretty well. I have 193 flights on mine now so I have to say confidence is definately building with the G26 in the Spectra, but you really need the balanced one that is as smooth as a G231, stock will not work.

both
When I purchased the 26 from Al at Hanson I had one of the guys that ran a 26 in his spectra call me and we talked about his ship and vibration. It may work with the gearing on the spectra, but IMHO it would work better with a lower gear.

I have had my 3d open tail for sometime and did all of the revisions of gears and outputshaft before they put the for nitro only stamp on it. I have reamed the machine out many times without issue. Up to you though..

Gear ratio
My answer to the lower gear ratio that Cody is saying is to drop the rpms. While you may have been suggested to run 1800rpms with the 7.15 gear ratio on the Spectra G with a 231, (close to 13k), I just drop the rpms for a G26 and run it at 1650rpm on average.

As I was saying before, my G26 seems to be very happy riding around in my Spectra.

Well, I hear the G23 is the motor now. It's the HOT ROD of G motors. I don't use one yet, but I will let everyone know how it works out. My friend Ron has many Gassers and swears by the G26 until recently. He heard that the vibrations are not worth putting one in and to go with the Zenoah G23. It has more power than needed for any 3D maneuvers and does not vibrate. With the new Spectra G heli, it has the Forward or backwards motor mounting capability and I was wondering which way do you guys run yours. Tim at MAH said that having the motor in backwards is better for 3D stuff. Is frontwards a big difference in 3D flying or better for regular flying? I'm going to have the V-Blades 710mm mains and the 95mm V-blade tails, GV-1 Govenor, GY611 gyro, DS8411 Digital Servos and the JR 9 channel receiver. I may use the new scan receiver if it is available in 7 channels for $99. I also use the JR9303 radio.

Here for a good time, not a long time!

G23?
You mean G231 right? If you are talking G23 that is the older engine not as powerful as the G231.

Yes! That is the one. I hear good things about it. I can't wait to get it in the air.

Rbort, glad you cleared that up. In my decisions of trying to figure out what engine to get, that statement of the G23 just confused me. Man sakes alive, G23, G26, G230RC G230PUH, G231PUH, G260RC, G260, Daves motors, Hanson motors, motor ranging from $199.00 to $479, balanced, ported, different carburators, different spark plugs, holy cow! I think its easier to pick a nitro engine.

I would like to come out there some day. I only live outside of Springfield about 8-10 minutes. My friend Ron (shooter) will like to come too. He's my technician/mechanic. hes's quite good with these silly things. I guess you could call him a perfectionist. He has a bunch of gassers.
