Strange Problem with Schulze 40.160H
During an AP session at a very tight location last Sunday, I landed my MJ2 in a pine tree. Damage was mainly confined to a broken main blade and a flybar that was almost completely twisted around the main shaft (and a heli that now smells like a pine tree). It took me about 20 minutes to retrieve the heli from the tree, and during that time, the ESC apparently went into shutdown mode. Neither the motor (a Plettenberg 370/40/A2) nor the Schulze 40.160H ESC were overheated.

A day or two later, after repairs, I tried to restart the motor. The controller gave four beeps on the initial try and on one or two tries after that. Four beeps is a warning for a low battery, but the pack was fully charged. After a couple of tries, the ESC began to arm properly (one beep at low throttle, two beeps at high throttle), but the motor would only run for a few seconds at low RPM and then it would stop. I tried a different battery pack, many different throttle settings and starting combinations, contacted Schulze (no help), and was about ready to give up.

Then, I tried holding my thumb against the main gear to put a load on the motor as it started spinning. Success!! The motor ran a little longer. I repeated the action about five or six times, and now the motor appears to be starting up and running perfectly.

I have not flown yet, because I am not completely convinced that I have solved the problem and that the motor isn't going to quit on me in mid-flight. Does anyone have any ideas what happened??

I am going to be getting one of these for my Maxi Joker 2 I hope some one has and opinion on this would be good to know.

I think for the most part the Schulze 40.160H is pretty much a bullet proof ESC right?

No info about others ESC as this is the only one I own. General impression is that it´s worth the price and runs as smmoth and cold as I expected. Your problem due to the crash looks more serious than a simple cold solder. To be tru I never got any friendly answer from sultze and I hope not to need their services in the future but must recogn that being you I would send it to them for reparation.

You can also use the new Kontronik Power-Jazz or the actronic 120.
The first serial Power-Jazz controllers came in this week. Tests with the prototype twp months ago were very successfull, no sudden shutdown during narrow Tic-Tocs.

Here some pics:

I have weighted 225 g with cooling fan.
Edited 06/14/2007: Do no remove the fan, especially not in hot areas with temperatures above 30°C/86°F.

Don´t forget to order with a Power-Jazz additional a "Prog-Card". In delivery setup the Power-Jazz is only for airplanes (NO soft start/NO governor mode). With other words: The Power-Jazz does not run in a helicopter in delivery condition!

For initial setup you MUST mount it between Jazz and Rx. Seems that you need an additional cable with two JR-shoes (double-male) to connect it with the Rx. Why they have not simply soldered a servo cable on the PCB-board will be Kontroniks secret. This cable is not packed to the card.

The recommended parametres I have marked with red dots.

My maxi crashed today, and I've got no idea why. The motor( acro 32-4) suddenly stopped, no weird sounds, just flying along great, and boom, no power. i tried to auto, but too much weight to do a nice one. ever heard of any 40.160 issues?Rhett..... I can't fly, but the Profi sure can.

I have been using the 40.160 for almost three years and many many flights doing 3D with not one hickup.

Did you inspect the motor afterwards and verify that the fault was the controller?

Schulze 40.160H
Well, I've run two or three battery packs through the Schulze since the pine-tree landing and no problems so far. I think I will continue to test the MJ2 at low elevations at the ball field to try to restore my confidence in the controller. I don't have any AP work on the front burner right now, and I've got another bird I can use in the meantime (a J2).

I really don't think sending the controller back to Schulze is a practical cure, especially now that it appears to be working perfectly. The tech that I contacted via e-mail told me that I had a loose battery connection.

I have gone over the motor, controller, and wiring very carefully. There is no visible physical damage. It was a pretty soft landing in the pine tree. I didn't even damage the tail boom. The only possible explanation that I can think of for the bizarre controller behavior is that the motor over-amped when it stalled. But why I was able to get the controller working again by putting a load on the motor remains a mystery.

Rhett: I have had a problem with wiring on the Actro 32-4, too. The insulation on the motor leads can slide outward to the point where the bare wire under the insulation will short out on the motor frame. THAT leads to some real bizarre behavior. I put up a post on it several months ago.

0-1-0-1-0-0, the same in all future-models. Switch 3 is governor-switch, throttle curve is "0", governor-mode is "1". The switches are very sensitive, better use them only a few times.

Small annotation to the Power-Jazz I have mentioned above. Yesterday Ingo Schmitz had a very bad crash with his Joker testing the first time a serial made Power-Jazz. The controller has obviously produced heavy interferences, absolutely different to the prototype Ingo tested some months before, so the G3-receiver changed to F/S-mode. Something must be different/worse here.

Gerd,
is it possible to get 3 more of these bullet connectors that go into the speed control?

I would like to set up a 2nd joker and would like to put these bullet connectors on the motor wires of the #2 joker and just switch the ESC between each or when I need to use the back up ship.

Power Jazz
Hi Gerd,

Finally, have you make more investigations about the problem of "noise" from the power Jazz which occurs at Ingo fly test?
Is it just for 3G or probably with PCM1024 and others modulation??
I'm a little worry because I will received in next week the Power Jazz wich I was ordering from 1 year ago and dont want test a crash...

Thanks for your return of informations.

Best regards, Fred
