I don't know if you have them available over there, but there is a product out there called "drill out" which works fantastic for removing small broken bolts and screws. They are available at most automotive parts stores. I got mine from NAPA, balkamp part number 770-3377. I have used them numerous times and they have never let me down. Hope this helps you.

As I was taking the engine out of my Freya last night, I noticed I'd replaced the stock bolts with standard cap head screws - I wonder whether the original screws had shallower 'indent' and hence the hex key more likely to slip - there must have been a reason why I replaced them but can't think what it was.

They were rounded like a pan head screw. I think they are fairly soft too. I also think the internal hex is smaller than the standard cap screw. I try not to use them and use a cap screw instead.
