My first forced auto.
Well am i glad I practiced this on the sim.....
About 50 feet up and motor just stopped!!
I had just levelled out after a flip, motor died and I knew that this would test me. Heli started falling, gave a touch of neg collective and I herd the blades gain momentum. It was falling uncomfortably fast, but bout 5 feet from the deck gave it enough pos that it slowed real quick, A bit too quick really and it dropped the last foot or so onto the grass.
Luckly it was thick longish grass but enough for the blades to still be spinning when I got to it.

The only damage is a small dent in the boom where a blade has hit it. But still flyable.

I was so happy that 1, it was ok, and 2, I had succesfully managed my first auto. Kinda glad it happened really.

Turned out that the bat wire broke off the ec3 connector.

Why fly RC helis? Because Rugby, Soccer and Golf only require 1 ball...

Great work Corrari

Practicing autos on the sim is a MUST do exercise and everybody should do it. I learnt autos a few months ago and now just love doing them. Theres nothing like the buzz of turning a perfectly good engine off and trying to land it!!

Engine has stopped a couple of times expectingly and autos have saved the heli from repair bills. Best thing I have learnt and personally think it should be part of the wings badge.

The wings badge of planks consists of a dead stick land if memory serves me correctly.

Curtis burnt his hand in a lipo explosion
Gents,

Not sure how many people here follow Curtis's blog:

A reminder about the respect we must give lipos as it can happen to the best.

Cheers,

This might be a good juncture to talk about proper lipo disposal.

In the past I have simply dropped the lipo into a glass jar full of saline solution and left it outside for two days. A quick check with the multimeter confirms that it has 0v potential and is safe to dispose of in the trash.

Let me know if any of you guys can help out with a static display or flying displays at the Waikato Hospital on Sunday (1st MAY)

Kick off is 10:00am I think it is all over by 2:00pm there will be a few full sized helis on display (and I think the heli simulator and I don't mean Phoenix, but the full size sim)

It is all to help raise money fo rthe Westpac Trust air ambulance so any help you guys can give would be much appreciated. We can fly in the park just accross the road from the heli pad at the hospital.

They had heaps of stuff for the kids last year, face painting, horse rides, photos in the Rescue heli as well as food etc.

In the past I have simply dropped the lipo into a glass jar full of saline solution and left it outside for two days.
I put my old LiPOs into a bucket of sand with about four or five small light bulbs wired in series with the battery to drain the pack.
It also doubles as a sort-of "voltmeter" because the bulbs (of course) light up when they're wired to the battery & gradually go dim before eventually "switching" (by swithcing, I mean the battery running out of power to light the bulbs) off altogether. Then I do the usual check with a voltmeter & then throw 'em in the bin.

I've only had to do this once so it may or may not work, & I (hopefully) don't get the chance to do this very often.

Oh & a quick update on my Heli fleet by the way. I've got my FP honeybee up & flying around. It flies nice & docile & I'm pretty used to it now. I'm even flying figure-eight circuits with it. The next step is to do some left-side in hovering.

& I'm looking at getting me that Phoenix RC Sim, I hear it's good. Could anybody sell it to me for a good (cheap) price?

Albany tornado
Has anyone heard from the Hobby City guys?

The tornado appears to have been smack bang in the middle of their block of shops from the look of a few photos??

Hi Guys, we are all ok thanks. Although we had a front seat view I must say I wouldnt mind if that was the last time I saw a twister close up! The noise was incredible and a quick dash to the rear of store was in order, luckily for us it didnt come in our direction but hit the old Placemaker building directly opposite us. Shame about the fatality though!

Cheers, Simon.
