Trex and 14 MZ setup
I am using a 14MZ and have a setup question,

I set the distance on my servo arm to 15MM as it states in the book and in the intial setup I have WAY TO much throw, so I set the ATV to about 35% to get to approx 9 degrees pitch at full stick. Is this the right approach?

That will work just fine =)
You can also set the endpoints in the swash travel menu. You may also want to turn the rate down some along with the throw, but that depends on binding and your flying style. don't tlet the swash anywhere near the shaft colar or the washout touch the headblock.

Make sure the endpoints are the same in each mode, as well as the rates!
Otherwise you may get a funky suprise when flipping to one mode from another.

here is what I did, I made sure the swash plate is flat via setting all the servos and arms the same length, then I set the stick all to full pitch, I set the paddles even eith with the head and flat, then noted the blade pitch (way too high)

Using the ATV I set the end point to approx 35% on all three servos of course and this gave me about 9 degrees of pitch.

I still need to set the hover pitch and the low stick setting pitch as well.

You should keep your ATV's as close to 100 as possible. You will lose servo resolution if your ATV's are too low. On both my T-Rex 450's and my T-Rex 600 my ATV's are 100 or very close to that (I am also using a 14mz). If you need to reduce collective pitch or cyclic pitch, use the swash menu. You would probably need a swash value of about 30 to 35 to get 9deg. I run 12.5 deg on my T-Rex 600 and my swash value for pitch is 51 and ATV's are 100 using Futaba 9451 servos.
