OS 50 Hyper bearing problem... ACTION NEEDED!
Hey everyone,

First, Mark please don't move this thread. I want it for everyone to see and to get a greater response.

I have just contacted OS engines about the bearing problem and they have told me that they have not heard anything about it. They requested that I email them with what happened to my engine and a link to the OS bearing consumption thread. I encourage ALL OF YOU who have had issues with your OS 50 bearings to email OS ASAP. The more they hear from us, the more likely they are to look into the issue. The email address is below.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been a recall or something about these engines thus far as it seems to be well known and common. Let's let them know so that they can fix the problem and we can have our reliable OS engines working again without worry.

It takes 5 minutes to write an email to them. Instead of posting saying that they're lying or the such, just shoot them an email. What do you have to lose? If they do nothing, then it's a bad look for them, but unless you have already contacted them about the issue, please don't post saying they are lying about the situation. Neither of us knows whether or not OS has been contacted about this issues, especially if you haven't contacted them yourself.

Also, it would be nice if you could post here letting everyone know that you have informed OS. This way, we have record that they have been informed and OS can't claim that they haven't.

It takes 5 minutes.

Mikel

Interesting, I have flown a OS50 SXH for about 48 gallons and no bearing problems at all. I have two Hypers with several gallons on them and no problems.

Keep in mind I have done the crank mod to these engines so that may or may not have anything to do with it.

The Bearing issue is not only prevalent in their 50's, but, in their 37's as well.

first you have to ask yourself ?
Have I followed os warranty requirements?
Like remove the glow plug after flying and blow unburnt fuel out
Then place after run oil in the cylinder and spin it over then put glow plug back in!

I have seen tons of OS motors ran and have never seen this done EVER and if you’re not doing this you haven’t got a leg to stand on.

Sorry but good luck! Chet

sorry Chet, but that's just not true, when I was a newbie I burned a piston in an OS 46 because I leaned to much and Hobby Services replaced the piston/ring and liner for free, plus~ there are millions of glow plane motors (and all brands of heli motors) that set all winter with fuel in their crankcase and their bearings don't go bad,,

guys,,, please do what QuantumPSI has asked !!!! this is a problem !!,,,

my bearing went bad in 2.6 gallons, 2 oz of Castor was added to all 3 gallons..

"edit" Email sent !!

there has got to be aproblem,

in my club one guy had his go, then next day so did another,
this is problem, i thought it may be due to damp weather in the UK,
or not drying your engine out after flying session, but this problem is all over the world, from east to west, which covers all types of weather variants and all types of fuel,
so it has to be a specific problem witht he OS50 Hyper

Homm, I get about 300 flights from brand new 50 Hyper engines. My New 91 Cspec had 1 flight whereupon the bearings siezed due to rusty bearings. Ceramics in my 50s last about 30 flights. Stock OS replacement bearings can last between 30 and 300 flights. I think we're missing something Vegetable rights and Peace

I got 10 gallons through my hyper 50. No bearing problems yet.
Does running a low nitro content and adding castor oil help?

With all the warranty they've handed out on this issue, I'm sure that they are quite aware of the problem. Same with the 9254. They've warranted a bunch of those too. They'll never admit it though!

I am going to write them a letter and point out there suspect business practices. With problems like this they are about go down to only 98% market share. That ought to scare the pants off them.

OS has been selling these .50's for some time now and the problem has always been there. They seem to still sell quite a few so in their opinion this problem is not a problem. Nothing is perfect and I love my .50's. Sure the bearings get changed once in a while but they usually give you a warning.

OS is like any other business. If you owned @95% of a market of a certain product and had people saying you were doing something wrong would you really believe them?

The best way you could show your dissatisfaction would be to buy a different brand 50, maybe a piece of crap Thunder Tiger, Than you'll think the OS is not so bad.

Once you go Ceramic, it's hard to go back.

I back when the YS91 was first released I experienced multiple bearing failures using 30% fuel.

Yes, YS Performance covered the bearing replacements under warranty but it's a pain when your try'n go get your fly'n on and can't "feel me?"

So I tried a set of ceramic bearing and never looked back.

Hope this helps,

Nas,

I have not had these issues with the Hyper bearings. I think I got mine not long after they came out and one did get new bearings recently but it had too much time and fuel to consider it a warranty issue. I store my helis inside the house and do not burn the fuel out of them. I shut them off by the kill switch and clamp the fuel line.

I think proper breakin procedure and limiting the Hi needle from a lean setting will make any engine's bearings last a long time.
Why I see some pilots spend a lot of time tinkering with the Hi needle to get "more power" makes me ponder if I got the only best engine.
