149 flights, first set of tail rotor gears, GONE!
Well I'm up in Maine again for the weekend. Was out at the BAM local field yesterday with my Spectra-g and T-rex. Did 3 flights on the Spectra, 2 on the t-rex and left to go get some lunch and go touring around the seashore.

In the evening my wife decided she is going to Sears shopping so I go "ok, I'll meet you back at the house" and I stopped by the field for another couple of flights.

Two more flights on the T-rex and then I brought the Spectra back out. I flew 1 flight no problem, second flight I noticed the tail was twitching a bit during some maneuvers which seemed "different". I thought maybe my gyro tape was coming un-done so I landed and checked that, looked OK. Hmmm.. interesting, maybe its the engine not running smooth? So I go back up and fly around some more, and in the last minute of normalcy I thought I heard some sort of whiny sound but I wasn't sure if I was hearing things or not as it was so faint and maybe I was just imagining it.

A couple of flips and 3D moves later all of a sudden she starts to torque roll and I see the tail rotor slowing. Damn! I hit throttle hold and now I'm falling out of the sky spinning and flying this thing at the same time (good thing I've been practicing flying pirouettes) thinking I'm going to end up in the tall grass/weeds as the runway is 50 feet wide and everything else is tall grass.

Somehow someway I cleared the tall grass and the piroutte finally stopped 5 feet above the deck and I was able to set in for a normal auto landing. You should have heard the "YEAH!" scream that I let out -- one other BAM flyer was on his way to the car to grab his airplane and he turned around with the WTF look -- he didn't know what happened as it just looked like I landed while I'm thinking awesome SAVE!

Post emergency landing I find the tail gears are stripped. Not sure why, but very thankful it ended in a safe landing. I have a new pair back home and I will be able to put it back together in about 20 minutes as its all apart already.

Post event the best thing I can say is practice flying around while pirouetting. I mean, hold tail, let it spin, and then try to fly it around in a circuit around the field. Doesn't have to be fast, but at a manageable speed. Learn to do that and it does wonders for you as you are trying to emergency land with a tail that lets go. I remember I used to crash in the past when I didn't know how to fly around like that, now its just another maneuver.

Raja,

I just love reading your stories and your reviews. Attention to detail and information which come off as a bit extraneous at times add that much more enjoyment of reading them. 149 flight eh? That is just incredible.

Do you have a thread on the forum where you've actually documented your spectra build process? I am just mind boggled by how durable and reliable your Spectra has been.

Good save by the way.

That's funny!
You know my wife tells me all the time I should write a little book about gassers! I guess I tell a good story eh?! :-)

Funny how you mention the name "the little gasser that could". I've actually named my helis. The old 1005 gasser that I'm had for almost 10 years (birthflight 9/22/07) with 1584 flights if I remember right (I'm in Maine and the flight counter is at home -- oh yeah, see a picture of my flight counters in my gallery). This one is called "old faithful" as its been around for a long time and just flies and flies and flies!

Next is the Spectra which I've had for almost a year, birthflight on 9/21/06. Its called "the new kid on the block".

Last I got my T-rex that I bought used off of Mike Swift back in July. I call that "the little one".

So maybe you ought to look for "the little gasser that could" in a bookstore near you next year eh? Actually I like the saying: "Gas helis can do it all for less" as over the years you save the cost of nitro fuel and end up ahead.

Hey Dennis, nice to hear from you!!
YEAH, she lives!!! I'm staring at her right now in my mother in law's place all in 1 piece except for the tail rotor which is in parts in a zip-lock bag. What a beautiful sight!! Tomorrow is an all electric FF here in Maine. They were requesting a "noontime" demo with my gasser but guess I can't fly NOTAR. Will have to get my fill the "the little one" T-rex that I bought this summer from another fellow. Those are nice little machines, if you can find one used I recommend it. I got the balls to do low invered flight with it and have learned that really well, along with backwards flight. Now I can even do low inverted nose in hover, BUT....I haven't tried that with the Spectra or 1005 yet!!!

Well Done Raja !

And the light shines on ! Great save ! I can only imagine the rush !

Now I have something new to practice! Have you named the new proceedure - like " Twirling Derby of Raja - No Tail Landing"

or:

What tail control ?? I dont' need no stinking tail control!

For your review Here's a mod I made to the 1005 front bearing block.

I also made a mod the tail housing just after this photo. I slotted the center divider of 1/2 the plastic case with my X -saw to port grease to the rear second bearing which I found dry and along with the shot gears,

I don't have my Spectra yet- -- so not sure what kinda box they got- but Christsmas isn't that far a way ! Job well Done !!!! PS> I got it cured !

Definately!
Man on man when you land a bird that was destined to crash the adreneline rush is overpowering you just want to scream yeee-ha and be heard in the next town over (and I do!). What a rush!!

However its not the best way to land so best to stay away from the "Twirling Derby of Raja - No Tail Landing" thing if you can avoid it all together!! Those things do happen sometimes so practice pirouette flying when you can (do 5 minutes per flight towards the end when the fuel is low) and that will help save you when the situation arrives. Best to remember if you see ANY unwanted tail rotation to hit throttle hold asap. Oh yeah, almost forgot, but, you gotta practice and know how to do autos before you know how to do pirouette flying around --- doh!

Not sure the gear box needs grease. I've never greased mine in the past 10 years!!

Hey? You got the jiggles cured? What was it? Gyro tape? Something else? Inquiring minds want to know!

No grease in 10 years - Boy that's good grease !
U'mmm - ummmm' - good stuff - a little bit goe's -a long - long way's !

Yur joshing right ?? Oh MY

I lube every two gallons or so during a PM. I use a product called Permatex Industrial Super Lube # 82325 a Synthetic with teflon . Recentley re- labled as { Permatex Ultra Slick # 81946 } AVEC / with PTFE. I shoot it in thru the dorsal set screw port - to fill the box using a glue syringe. Also use it on the buna spider - for the ra- generator. " Hence I never had to use them spares"

It then migrates from the box thru the 1st bearing- down the slot modification - thru the second bearing and then heads down hill to pass two "2" M/A hanger bearing set- up's. When I broke down the SE / Hanson during rebuild -every bearing was shot or rusted shut from a lithium " clay based " lube failure or lack of it!

Inquiring mind's would like to know that:
A. Neutering the ball's out of the canfield was a big step.
B. Thanx to Barracudahockey:
I was under the impression that the 9c had two seperate menue
gyro screens used for programming!

- one for HH or AVCS and one separate for Non -or Normal
Percentage gain's controled for each in the UP -Down modes
in reality : one is exclusivley the GY screen for Fut's GY's
: one is for Norm " the other gyro's"

It' ain't in the manual !

End result ? Hypnotic - creepy -silient- ballon like as if suspended on a string and Oh so smoooooth.

And for my next trick ?? Do you know the bolt pattern on top of the Jewel so I can put a little rain cap on to keep the windings dry when its sprinkling ??

Back in the air!
Well yesterday I reassembled the tail box with new gears and got her all flight ready. Apparently I lied, not 20 minutes to put it back together, more like 100! Well the trouble came in when I was trying to set the lash of the gears. I thought I had it just right, I locktited all the bearings and greased it all and all back together only to find I couldn't put the darned C-clip on the back side. I didn't leave enough room there so I had to take it all back apart and move the gear/bearing some to make more space only now the locktite had frozen so it was a delicate struggle to get things freed up without damaging anything to redo it. Took a couple of attempts of where you lock in the crown gear to get the C-clip fitted and have no play in the shaft in/out of the gear box. My first time assembling this from scratch so I didn't do it in the right order first time out.

In any case out at the field in the afternoon, logged 2 more flights and everything is hunky dory as they say and its running nice and sweet. Ready to go to the 495th ff on Saturday, can't wait! I also took my 1005 gasser and did some flights with that, all running good as well. Its amazing the feel between the 1005, the T-rex and the Spectra. As you fly from one machine to another you lose the "feel" of the machine temporarily and your inputs are not as accurate as they would be if you fly one machine solely. Its like I need to get reused to the feel of the machine after I've been flying something else. That night after 5 gasser flights I went to fly the T-rex in the back yard and it popped off the ground skyward! I forgot that thing didn't need as much collective movement to get going...

Saves feel great!
Hey Raja, I know exactly what you mean. There's nothing quite like that feeling when you cheat certain death for your heli. I had a similar experience at our Delaware funfly a couple years ago. I was flying my predator and the metal end came off the end of the carbon tail control rod. Having worked to get the linkage very loose and free moving, the blades immediated shifted and my beautiful Predator began pirouetting crazily. What's more, it was banked over when this began, so I was certain that was the end. However, from somewhere inside my screaming brain came the best idea I had in a long time: don't give up! I maintained half stick to just hold altitude (~50 feet) while I wrestled with the cyclic to try to get it right side up. I don't really know how to do a pyroflip, but I started to stir the stick and did kind of a partial pyro to get the chopper upright. At that point I punched the collective and shot it up to ~200 feet. Man, I thought it was pirouetting before, but now it was turning into a blur. At the top of the climb I hit the hold switch and began a normal auto and was relieved to see the heli stop pirouetting after four or five rotations. From here I was able to do a normal autorotation into the wind and set it down in one piece. Man I gotta tell ya, when I got that thing on the ground I had the biggest feeling of elation, followed by the most tired feeling in the world from all the adrenaline. After a minute or two in the slumped over position I looked up to see the biggest disappointment of all time: nobody had seen it! During this whole thing there must've been 30 or so people in the pits or nearby, but not a single person saw it! I quietly picked up my heli and walked back to the pits, determined to figure out how to do a pyro flip for real some day (still not sure how I pulled it off that day), and had a nice long sit.
