Tail rotor bade grip question
After not flying my 3D Tempest for a while i thought i would give it a check over and discovered play in the tail grips and was wondering if it is normal as i can't remember what it was like when it was new.

I have checked the nuts holding them on and they are fine. The movement is not towards the nuts the whole blade holder and bearings can move on the shaft. It seems like the bearings are slightly to big for the shaft. Is this normal?

Cheers Ian

I'm no expert on this but I noticed the same thing on my brand new Stratus. Haven't caused me any problems thus far though.

Yes, normal - there is a slight play in the tail grips. Both my Tempest and Extreme have this.

Thanks guys. How much though? With the tail blade in line with the holder i can rock the tail blade holder resulting in a total of 4-5mm deflection as the bearings in the holder rock on the shaft.

Are you guys getting the same amount?

Cheers Ian

It depends. Does the tail give you any problems. How old is the heli.
Are the bearings notchy, if so just change them. If the bearings are smooth and the nuts on the t/r hub are tight, I would just fly it.
Just do it.

Ian,

On the single radial/single thrust bearing MA hubs, a slight amount of ENDPLAY is normal. Measured at the tip a a t/r blade, you'll see at least a few mm of lateral play since only one of the two bearings in the hub is providing support for this on the shaft. It's of zero concern once the model is running. Of course, make sure all of your bearings and shafts are in good shape. My comments rest on this assumption.

Hi Ben,Rada70,

The bearings are in good shape, the heli has not had extensive hours put on it and the tail flys great

Sounds good to me and you have put my mind at rest.

Nearly all machines will have some play at this point. When the tail is turning at full RPMs the blades and grips are tensioned and as straight and true as they need to be. My machines and any machines I have worked on are all the same. If it is not affecting the tails hold in a hard vertical tail slide then you have no issues. If not you will likely have excessive play in the grip bearings and should replace them. You may get away with tightening the tail hub to blade grip nuts a little. Just check they still run freely.

If it ain't broke...don't fix it!
