Which tail servo to buy now?
I just had a moment of brilliance! I accidentally switched the Digital Servo switch for the Futaba 401 to on and fried my hs-81 tail servo in a couple minutes on my QJ-8. Should I get another one, or get something digital? I don't do any hard 3D...just sport flying and an occasional loop or roll.

If you want to keep it low cost, then the HS81 is still the best bet.

But if you don't mind spending more, then the 9254 will be the best you can get for the setup. Else the Hitec HS6965 is also pretty good.

Well, for the price of the 9650, it's not too far off from a Futaba 9254 or a Hitec HS6965, which will perform much better as you advance later on. The only penalty is the weight compared with 9650

9254 is $109 compared to $59 for the 9650. That's a pretty big difference in my book. It looks like the Hitec 6965 is in the middle at about $85. I think I'll go with the 9650 unless the Hitec 6965 is a lot better??

I highly recommed the 9254, in fact, the new EX series has a slot made just for it because they think its almost required. The 9254 is a full sized servo, Its also a high torque high speed servo for helis, whereas the 9650 is a mini high torque servo. The 9254 was designed specifiacally for gyro use, says so on the case and they sell them in sets bundled with the 401 over here which means that they work optimal together. the duty cycle of a 9254 cant be beat.

Ok, I just installed the 9650 on my Qj8. I haven't tested it at the field, but did hover and a couple pirouettes in the driveway. So far, so good. It is quite a bit larger than the hs-81. Kind of inbetween the 9254 and hs-81. Looks good for $59. If I blow it up, I will get a 9254!

No, it's wider and I don't think it will fit. I mounted it to the back of the frame and used one of the servo hangers to hold the other end from the tail boom. I guess you could cut the frame opening larger, but this works well also..
