30-50 Conversion PROBLEM !
I'm almost done converting the 30v2 to a 50v2 and I installed the new pinion on the clutch bell and to my amazment, the starter shaft wont go through the pinion. I examined them size by side and there is no doubt that the inside diameter an the old 9T is larger than the 10T. These comversion parts came out of a sealed TT conversion kit. Why wouldnt the inside diamter be the same.... Whats the solution here? Buy a new 10T? Buy a new Starter Shaft? Help !! Thanks

I hate telling you this, but I wish you had just bought an R50v2.

Is this a different (V1) clutch bell? This is the only place where I could visualize this problem since the V1 starter shaft is a smaller diameter.

I don't think the pinion has a tight fit to the starter shaft and I think the V1 and V2 use the same pinion, though I don't remember right off the top of my head.

jschenck,

I don't know really, I bought this R30 a while back as a v2 and from what I can tell everything is in check w/ being a v2. The conversion kit was also for a v2... What do you think I might need to do?

Raffy,

That helps thanks !

Is this the same start shaft and clutch bell that was in the heli before the conversion? In other words, did you change anything other than the pinion? Also, when this was a 30 - did the starter coupler have one set screw or two? One set screw = V1, two set screws = V2.

yes, only attempting to change the pinion. Everything else is the same. And the coupler has 2 set screws...-- Gentlemen, we can rebuild it... We have the technology....Better…stronger…faster...--

hmm, perhaps post a photo?

can you take the pinion off the bell and see if the shaft will fit through? <-- that's a wild stab at it

If you look at the first pic you can clearly see that the inside diameter is smaller.

how about that, I must have the wrong pinion on my V1 !!

10T V1 pinion = AK0147
10T V2 pinion = PV0380

I'd be suspect of your "V2" conversion kit - where did you get it?
or call Ace and see of this was a genuine mistake.

on a related note: once you have the proper pinion, I'd suggest putting a bit of loctite between the pinion and the pinion bearing. that is a known issue where the bearing will slip on the pinion eventually causing quite a few problems.

I recall having the same problem when I did my 30 to 50 conversion a while back. The kit said it was for a V2 but but the pinion was for a V1. I was in a hurry to get it finished so i just purchased a new pinion at the LHS.

Thanks folks...

Michael,

I was thinking that the pinion is actually a v1 like you said. I'm just going to buy one at the LHS also. Thanks !
