Spektrum DX6 - Max voltage
Is it ok to run this transmitter on a 3 cell LiPo (12.6 volts)?

No. Stick with an 8 cell Nican/NiMh pack.

Thanks Paul,

Are you speaking from experience or is this an educated guess?

Is the DX6 more sensitive to voltage than a standard radio? Because I KNOW you can run a standard radio on a 3 cell LiPo or LiIon - have seen it done by people for years. I run a Duralite in my 9303 and it has worked very well with that. Just wondering if it has something to do with the DX6s differences, or if its more of a "we dont recommend you do it (because we dont sell it)" type thing.

If your interest is in increasing the running time of your DX6, and if you have some soldering skills, then check this thread on making the DX6 run more than twice as long on the standard battery pack. Obviously you'll void the waranty, but it's a very neat solution...

Dude,
Paul Beard is the creator and designer of the Spektrum system. He's also the creator of the TJ, TJ Pro, RevMax, and SkyTach Optical Tachometer.

Paul is definitely the guy to talk to when it comes to the Spektrum. He knows best. Beyond that, I would not recommend the 3S LiPO. The 3.3V linear voltage regulator on the Spektrum RF board already runs a bit hot with the 8-cell NiCD. With the higher voltage of the 3S pack, the additional heat is bound to stress the Vreg. The DC-DC switcher hack, as pointed out earlier, would easily allow the use of the 3S Lipo since that switching regulator runs quite cool.

With the switching regulator mod you're already at 5 hours on the standard 600mah battery. Go to 1800 nimhs and you should be at 15 hours (and you can get 2500 nimhs that will fit). Lipo is just overkill.

OK Dude,

You sound like you expected me to know that..... why would I??

...............

Rob_T,

Mine is all standard and runs for 30 mins on a fully charged pack, I take there is a fault somewhere.

There's something seriously wrong if you're only getting 30 minutes. You should be at about 2 hours. It's probably still under warranty, so get it fixed before trying any mods to increase the run time further. It might just be your charger- can you try another?

If it's brand new it may need cycled a few times to get it to sustain a charge.

Mine ran for what seemed a very short time on the stock 600mah nicd - I swapped in a 2100mah nimh to get what I consider 'normal' run times out of it - Been tempted to do that Demension mod but I'm getting by with it as is.

CC,
What run times are you getting with the 2100 mAh packS?

I don't know really - I've yet to run it for more than an hour without charging it - Other than it lasting longer than the rediculously short runs I was getting with the stock battery I haven't paid much attention to it.

I think the real issue must be with the regulator myself because transmitting seems to really suck the battery compared to other radios I've used - I can use it on my sim forever and never drain the battery - I haven't tried the Demension mod yet myself but I'm convinced that's probably the real answer there.

I use my DX6 in for taking photos!
I have the Duralite's in it and it works fine I have had mine on and working hard for more than 4hours! I have seen NO PROBLEMS with this set up, BTW it is the same Duralite Battery that the 9303 use's!

Works Great For Me & has been for almost 6 months now.

Open up the back while after it has been runing for about 5 mins on your fully charged Duralite pack and put your finger on the LM2937 3.3 volt regulator on the Spekktrum output board.
