Peninsula Aeromodelers in Half Moon Bay, Calif. CLOSED!
It's now official after a year of arguing and fighting with the City of HMB, a few crooked politicians,
some ignorant landowners, a self-proclaimed environmentalist and a plethora of useless 2 faced City Supervisors the club is now ($12000+ wasted fighting the City) history after nearly 20 years in the same location. A beautiful field with 2 very nice runways and a bunch of good members and the whole treasury GONE!

Hey Shemp, come on down to Bayside in Fremont. It's a long drive for you but it's worth the trip. Good folks, very heli friendly, and free BBQ once in a while.

Sharam - Thank you for your very kind offer. I did fly midweek a couple of times at Bayside 6-7 years ago or so and had been to some flea markets there. Summers there are really HOT!!!
Nice field! It's a long drive for me and I still belong to PCC and BARCS so I will alternate between those 2 clubs for now.

Thanks again - Maybe I will drop by!

Shemp,

Sorry to hear about the closure of the Peninsula Aeromodelers.
As Sharam and Shawn mentioned, the Bayside club is Heli friendly
and has quite a few heli members. As a AMA member, you can fly
as a guest of any Bayside member.

Dave - Thank you for your kind offer.

FYI - PCC is 6 miles south of where PAM used to be.

PAM is now broke thanks to the City telling us to get a land survey with the implication that we still might be able to stay there. $4200 spent on it and they didn't even look at it before giving us the boot so now we have our 20 ft container with all our lawn mowing gear and weather watch sitting there and we can't afford to move it out!

The whole mess started when some cockeyed self proclaimed environmental saviour filed a complaint with the City that the club was disturbig the habitat of the Swivel Necked Ground Owl (it doesn't exist). We didn't know till much later that this guy was being backed by a City Council member who even after he was voted out last year was using his connections to push us out. Its really a much more involved and complicated story but I won't spell it out because it would take pages here.

Getting another field in the area is unlikely as land values are very high and liability issues are a concern plus the club now has no money.

it's this whole bay area! my local club up here(wine country flyers) is getting the boot too! yet again similar reasons, crooked politians(gettin bribed) and some guy 3/4 mile saying we're making to much noise! it's really a shame, half moon bay is a beautiful region and acreage costs are similar to up here in sonoma.

im curious, in what way do the r/c models disturb this owl? as best i can tell no bird has ever minded my r/c aircraft, infact they tend to watch them.

Well actually at my field we have alot of storks and eagles. Since both species are protected (and even if they weren't, it would be the same) we take great care to avoid them. Only catch is that sometimes the storks are looking for mates and white gliders seem to atract them alot. Kinda funny watching an excited stork trying to mate with a 10 feet glider

Eagles on the other hand kinda get curious and aproach the planes alot. Some care is needed. Injuring/killing an eagle here will give you 3 years jail. No bail.

Ducks are fun to watch too while flying in formation with planks

Helis don't atract wild life as much as planks. Wonder why?

We have Paragon's, Eagle's and Osprey around here.
They cruise by all the time and never give us a 2nd glance!
We never mess with them either though.
But I have soared with the buzzards a few times..

We paid thru the nose to get an environmental impact report at the City's insistence using the person they recommended to do the study.
The bottom line was we were not disturbing the environment in any way and oddly enough many bird species in our immediate area had actually increased in population since we arrived. They ignored the study.

Everytime they set new standards
for us to meet - we did it and then they set new standards and requirements which we always met sometimes at great expense which would piss them off and result in new hoops to jump thru. It was an endless on going process for 2+ years now.

Is Wine Country Flyers in Healdsburg losing their field as well?? They are on Land Fill I thought!

yea i think r/c's infact increase the general bird activity simply because they tend to like to be around other flying objects.

and well with wcf. we are on a dump, but apparently our field is too close to the upcoming suburbs that will be built over a mile away

see that second ridge(farthest one out) thats where the houses will be.

pretty much the guy in charge of that whole project of the homes that will be there in 2 or more years bribed the county to get us kicked out.... that and one guy is complaining about us making noise.

best of luck with finding a new field down there!

how are they with allowing you do fly at half moon bay airport? it's only class e airspace. they do it over at sonoma skypark.

It doen't seem feasible to approach the HMB aitport for permission to fly there although we have several members who fly full scale there. There is housing close by who complain about the full scale noise so the added RC noise would not be tolerated although it certainly seems like it would make a great place to fly RC.I think many Pilots woud not want us there for fear we would be a danger.

WCF are getting areal screwing. Those people are too far to hear your planes. Do some sound studies and get those assholes off your backs OR go to electrics only and see what new BS excuse they come up with.

i know some guys down there at hmb airport that are extremely big into r/c! any space that didn't have plane stuff was r/c haha. he also had this really cool rig for his j3 cub on floats where he'd take off from the runway on a dolly and then come back in on the grass.

he's the guy who'd fly zagi's with model rocket motors ever heard of him down there?

and with wcf the issue is those people who go flying when us(the compident pilots) aren't there to watch them. so they do super massive approaches with their screamin planks doing 120 mph and just go unneccasarily far out over this guys house. the helis are a non issue.

it's a shame when one guy ruins it for all of us like that.

I'm very sorry about the loss of your field, but I have to set the record straight with regard to WCF in Healdsburg. In my opinion, the situation there is nothing like what is being described in the HMB case.

A property owner on the north end of the field started the ball rolling after several "incursions" over and into his property. Club members were told time and time again to stay away from the property at that end of the field but failed to do so. Several planes actually went down in that field and were confiscated by a very disgruntled property owner. The property rights of WCF's neighbor trump WCF's right to use a public space.

I flew at WCF for several years and am sad to see it go. What we do need to understand, however, is that not everyone shares our love of the hobby. If I were in that situation and had no interest in R/C, I'd be pissed if people were flying noisy planes over my property every day.

I don't think it's fair to blame "crooked" politicians on the WCF case. It's simply a matter of a pissed-off neighber and poor enforcement of club rules over a period of years. More could have been done and should have been done to deal with the situation before it got out of hand.
