AP for Bill Board! helpp!
Hello Guys,

Anyone here expirence with doing AP which were then used for Bill Boards?

I have a client who requested for AP and intends to use them for bill boards, and eventually wants the picture that can be blown up to something like 50ft by 40ft big. I use 8400nikon pixel, I dont think that lil poor thing can take picture of such high resolution?

Or shall I print A4 size printed in high quality and then get them scanned in high resolution?

Billboards are a whole different animal.
The resolution requirements are not that high as it is more of a "printing" process than actually photographic reproduction.

Greg McNair has had one of his images put on a billboard.
I am pretty sure he was using an 8.0mp 20D at the time.

I would ask your client what the printers requirements are for file size and resolution.
Then go from there each printer could be drasticallly different.

8 meg camera X 48 bits per pixal in TIFF format is 384 megabits or approx. 40MB.

You will have to shoot in tiff or raw to get the expanded (overkill) bit count. Resized low compression jpg saved as TIFF will be adaquate IMHO.

200MB per image is a lot to ask from anything you can carry up on these platforms.

You would be best seved with something that shoots 12mp or better and add a few layers.

I would sit down and discuss the abilities of your aircraft with the printer and come up with a suitable piece of equipment to do the job.

I do signs and have had billboard signs printed before. The paint dots on a billboard are about the diameter or a little larger than a pencil (but smaller than a dime). Billboard resolution is quite poor but it is viewed over a great distance.

If resolution needs to be increased I have also used Genuine Fractals plug-in for Photoshop.

My Dad owns his own ad agency, and shoots photos for billboards all the time.

He just uses a 9 megapixel Nikon DSLR, and the billboards look just fine.

Talk to the graphic artists at the print shop to get the real info at what they need. I doubt that 200 MB is what is really needed.

I have one of mine on a billboard @ 5mp. It’s not great but if it was higher off the ground it would work fine.
