Best way to install optical sensor from the TJ Pro on metal fan ?
Hey guys,

I've recently bought myself a 2ndhand Fury Extreme. It's completely set-up now, the only thing it's still missing is my TJ Pro which i have lying around somewhere.

I have the 2 sensors (optical and the magnet), i would like to install the optical one on my machine. The only thing is, the extreme is equipped with the metal fan.

I know when i'll stick the reflecting pad to the metal fan, that the optical sensor will not recognize it due to the fan being metal.
So the only option is to spraypaint the fan. What paint should i use or do you guys recommend to install the magnet into the fan.

So, let me know your tips and reactions plse.

Grtz,
Dirk

You can just spray paint the fan with a black matte finish otherwise the black can also reflect.

I used perm black magic marker on mine, so far it has held up to a number of gallons of flying. It's a good quick fix until you have the heli completely apart.

How about painting the entire underside of the fan matte black except for one masked off stripe for the sensor to read?

You do not need to spray the whole fan, just a stripe matt black. Used that originally, currently I am using a matt black piece of paper glued to the fan.

I have used the same method as above on both my 90s in the past. I painted the whole underside black with the exception of one strip left bare metal. This worked well but I have had paint come off and confuse the TJ. In my case the engine cut when inverted (the underside of the fan was exposed to the sun and light was reflecting off the poor area on the fan) but I landed with no issues. You can be sure the paint will come off when you least want it to. I was doing a demo at a funfly when it happened to me!

In my opinion (based on my experiences)I recommend taking the time to install a magnet and re balance the fan. The CSM Revlock RL20s I run now work just great with the magnets.

The choice is yours!!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies, i've just spray painted the fan this afternoon and left a strip covered with tape. When everything was dry i removed the strip and installed the engine back in my Fury.

Did one testflight this afternoon and the sensor is working as it should. I know the paint will come off, but i don't have any magnets here at this time, so in due course i will replace the opicale sensor. But for now it's A OK !!
