cuda, that's really impressive.

most people cant afford to do that though.

why do you think they are inconvenient? for people who can fit their stuff onto one, it's worth it.

a 200gb drive is only $50 these days. but, i run a freelance design business from my house and need to archive a lot of clients' data. hence a lot of reduandancy on the workstations, and lots of onsite and offsite backup. but, there's no reason not to pop in a big harddrive, do a dump, and put it back in the safe every couple of months or so even for the casual user (i finally got my 60 year old dad to start doing it--and, it's saved his bacon twice now).

DVDs are inconvenient just because you have to keep feeding the machine discs, and the amount of time it takes. plus, DVDs take forever to boot, if you have the wherewithall to manage the task in the first place. a bootable harddrive will have you back up and running as quickly as you can pull the cover from your computer case.
if it ain't broke, break it.

Most prized possesion.
I really can't see stopping to pick up an inanimate object, with a fire on my tale. I have to agree with the safety-first-fireman on this one. Really, I don't have anything that can't be replaced with money.
As a kid, teenager, I once assisted a volunteer fire department in putting out a brushfire. I was amazed at how fast a fire that was seemingly under control was able to gain the upper hand. I wouldn't think twice about leaving objects behind.
If I were going to take anything, I guess it would be some pictures and maybe my medals from rowing in college.

My Snap-On Toolbox.
I know that sounds like an odd reply... but I bought it from my father a few years ago when he retired from spinnin' wrenches for good. It has Snap-on wrenches and sockets etc. that my father bought in 1966 when he was 18 (I checked the date stamps on the tools). Those tools fed my family too many times to just let them melt to a blob.

I'd have to say all my albums. Not that I'd get them all, but all the direct masters anyway. I can replace the stereo, I can replace the heli's, (they're out in the shop anyway) and most of the stuff on the computers is backed up at work.

This is of course based on the basis of it being inanimate as the wife and kids (bassets) would be first...
