Most prized possession?
What is the one material thing that you own that you would attempt to take with you if the house was on fire?

Well after being on the fire dept for 28 years I can say without reservation that the ONLY thing and I mean the ONLY thing you should concern yourself with is making sure that ALL of your family members are out safely and NOT going back inside or looking around for ANYTHING ELSE!!! My Dad was also a fireman and he was on a fire where a man went back in (before the fire dept got there) for a few hundred bucks and it cost him his life. He died within ten feet of the door on his way out. I tell all the young children that visit the station do not stop for anything. EVERYTHING can be replaced except the people living there!! You should have a meeting place somewhere out front or out back and all the family members should know where it is and practice getting out and have at least two different escape routes planned out. And I also tell everyone to place the call to 911 at your neighbors house or somewhere AWAY from your house. Time is very important so get out ASAP!! Sorry so long I'll get off my soapbox now.

like the fireman said, id not be going back in for anything. but, if my wife and kid are already out, or headed in the same direction as me, and my laptop is on the way out, id grab it. all the family photos are on it.

if my home office is on the way out, id stop in and grab the external backup drive too.

if the kitchen is on the way, i might grab a bag of marshmallows

with the *drivers* parked on the driveway, i think the contents of the garage would be a loss. cuda and gto are insured. thatd suck to lose them tho.
if it ain't broke, break it.

Ehhhh, leave it to the firemen safety guys to take the fun out of it!! That's just a joke, of course I have no intention of jeopardising anyone, it's just one of those fun things to think about, to put your "material stuff" in perspective.

For me, to answer my own question - moog taurus (musicians will know that one).

So if we have all this time for grabbing stuff how about grabbing a water hose and put the fire out as well??? Sounds like ya'll have seen one too many Hollywood fires. (no smoke and very little flame) If it is bad enough to get out then it is bad enought to do like I said before and get out NOW. If its just a pan of grease on fire on the stove then by all means very carefully put a lid on it or better yet sprinkle some baking soda on it or if you have one a short burst from a distance with a fire extinguisher tring not to scatter the grease thus spread the fire. NO WATER!! Really it does not take much time for the fire to gain the upper hand and then everything in the room becomes superheated and then you have what you call flashover. Everything in the room on fire at once!! Flashover has been known to burn the airpack straps off of a firefighter before they could escape the room. Just a little bit of info maybe not everyone knows. Its not the flame that will kill you. The smoke will get you long before the flame will.

OK, you obviously missed the point. Let's change the scinario. A genie comes to you and says that you may keep only one possession, the rest will be given to charity.

Get it now???

only on RR would a simple hypothetical question turn into "how to put out a grease fire" and a lecture from a fireman

One posession - gees that's a tricky one. Assuming you actually mean one item out of EVERYTHING I own, then it would have to be my PC or a backup hard drive as this has my whole life on it.Vegetable rights and Peace

for you guys with personal media you'd like to protect, such as family photos/movies, don't just back them up on a hard drive. burn them all onto a DVD as data. then you can throw it in your safe with your birth certificates and passports and social security info.

Redo the DVD every year.

Just don't bother if you are going to use cheap media like Office Max brand...Get good stuff.

HD's are great, but they are more risky than a hard copy in a fire proof safe....plain and simple.

i have 6 200GB harddrives in my fireproof safe, and 2 offsite. DVDs are almost as inconvenient as floppy disks when you have a lot of data.if it ain't broke, break it.
