Actually it guarantees both, it meant that you are free to believe what you want, but that is not the same as saying it meant you have a god given right to shove it down other peoples throats, which is exactly what would happen if any one religion gained any official recognition as the states official religion.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Study the history behind it other than the rhetoric that is passed around in a pursuit of "separation of church and state," at the time and for many years after some states had "official religions" including Connecticut. Like I said before, freedom of religion, not from it. There is nothing in the Constitution stopping anyone from shoving it down your throat short of breaking stalking, trespassing, or assault laws. Something that is ignored in the rhetoric is this only applied to Congress, not to the states. This was done to prevent the state from controlling politics and the Federal government from imposing religion on the citizenry. It did not however stop any of the states or municipalities from doing it. Many cities and some states were founded as religious "communes" if you will, ie Salt Lake City. I mentioned Conn., research the Danbury Baptists, a letter that Jefferson sent is where the phrase "separation of church and state" came from. What is never mentioned is the reason for him writing it. The Baptists were concerned that since the state was Congregationalist that their rights to worship may be infringed upon. He did not address this issue, he talked about a wall of separation, meaning that it wasnt the federal governments place to impose its will in religious matters.

Now read the First Ammendment again, to prohibit the free exercise there of.
On an individual level "Freedom of religion" has to also include freedom from religion, or it would be essentially saying that you are free to have a religion, but you must have one, you cant not have one.
You cant have it both ways, thats like saying we have the right to keep and bear arms and also the right to be arms free.

so i am being unconstitutional by choosing to not bear arms? because it is my right to be that way, the police cant come and say take this shotgun or go to jail.

i totally agree that people have the right to shove it down someone elses throat short of harassment.

No, and you arent by not practicing religion. It is a choice, a freedom that we have to practice something, not a freedom from it."There is a fine line between cutting edge and bleeding edge.."
