Discharging with a Trition Charger
Hey guys. I'm new to heli's and just flew my new trex SE. LOVE IT.
Anyways, I have a triton charger and (2) Flight power 2150mah 3s1p 11.1v packs.

I crashed the other day and didn't get the full use out of both packs. Both packs still have just over 11.1V in them. Do i need to use the trition to discharge these packs before i fully charge them again? Is it even necessary to discharge them? I thought since there is no memory i can just charge from where ever i left off as long as the pack doesn't drop below 3 volts per cell.

I hooked up my triton charger and there is only one setting to discharge a 3 cell lipo pack. I believe it discharges to a minimum of 3volts per cell. Isn't that too much since the nominal voltage is 3.7???? Last question, how many amps should i set it to when discharging?? I just tried using 1.8amps.

Thanks in advance guys!! Much appreciated.

Lipos have no memory effect so just charge without discharging first.

I agree with you about the discharge setting in the Triton - 3V per cell is too low, especially for the more recent high performance cells. You can get more flexibility in the nicad dischage mode - but whatever you do, dont forget to switch the charger back to lipo before charging!

To reproduce the capacity numbers used by the manufacturers, you should discharge at the 5 hour rate (C/5) I believe. That's 430ma for your battery. But if you just want a quick test - 1C is a good stating point. Really you can discharge at any rate upto the maximum rating of your battery if you want to- that will just tell you about battery behavior under different conditions.

I always discharge my cell before charging.
When I was discharging 3S apex lipo it actually stopped discharging at 9.72V, but now I discharge my 4s truerc lipo that I made myself and it goes right near 12V, 12.01V to be precise. And it charges perfectly fine, in fact the capacity is gradually increasing to 4000Mah which it's formally rated. Now the capacity is 3988.

I usually discharge the lipo pretty much completely in my heli by starting the motor and waiting it to turn off by ESC. This way I won't have to discharge at home.
