More smoke please
I'm wanting to produce LOTS of smoke from my heli and was wondering if anyone knows of a simple light weight method of doing this. I don't want to impinge on the performance of the heli if I can help it.

You could try using Magnum fuel, but if you don,t get enough smoke from that you could try injecting paraffin/diesel in to the muffler.Just smile

I'm already using Magnum30.
Where do you suggest the best injection point on the muffler would be ? this is an MP2, Also would it be beneficial to use an atomising nozzle ?

Yes an atomising nozzle would be best, but I'm not to sure of the best place to put the nozzle

Have a look at this

Or you can try these

Patriot - thanks for the link. My 1st thought when looking at the sullivan system was that one could do away with the pump, and use crank pressure with a regulator so as to maintain respectable pressure in the crank case when the fluid had run out. That would save some weight, but what with the crank pressure being so high, would achieve good atomisation at the nozzle. BUT am still stuck on the nozzle bit and where to fit it.Vegetable rights and Peace

Fit the nozzel at the hottest part of the muffler, genraly the header. Works well on my plane with a 90 CSpec fitted to it.

If its fitted on the header (near the tank pressure nipple) isn't there a risk of some of the oil being sucked back into the engine ?Vegetable rights and Peace

Great link and a very informative video. Interesting to see how he uses crank pressure as well as the configuration of valves. It didn't look as if he used an atomizing nozzle though.Vegetable rights and Peace

Also pre-heat the fluid as well. Wrap the smoke tubing around your muffler a few times to pre-heat it. In a pinch you can use lapidary oil. See your local rock affectionado for some. Shoot it at high pressure into the hottest point of the muffler which is generally right at the exhaust port. Also the larger the muffler volume, the more smoke due to "hang time". Are you sure you want to do this? It's a friggin mess!

Shorting lipo - great idea. Nothing like a few pyrotechnics to brighten up a flight

TOSH - many cheers for the link.

Do it the way plankers did before smoke oil. Run a small header tank using muffler pressure with diesel in it. The diesel from this tank goes to the muffler. Open the muffler and make a coil like a still using several turns of small copper wire inside the regular muffler. This gives you a heat transfer surface area. When the diesel from the header tank enters the copper tubing coiled in the muffler chamber it is heated to near combustion and is smoking big time and exits your regular exhaust hole of the muffler.RapRexSynLogo Pilot
