Connecting main battery - preventing the spark
How do you connect your main 10s/12s battery to a speed control? Do you use some sort of a switch? I have direct battery-to-ESC 4mm bullet connectors. Connecting second wire (positive or negative) results in a loud POOOF and a large scary spark. Is this bad for ESC?

Thanks

It´s due the the current charging the ESC capacitors. Not bad for the ESC but for the conectors that needs to be periodically cleaned and/or substituted.

I use a shunt consisting of two 220-ohm, 1/4 watt resistors in parallel. See pix.

Before connecting the ESC to the battery, I unplug the Dean's ultra connector and leave the micro connector with the resistors plugged in. Then, when I connect the battery to the ESC, there is no spark, because the resistors reduce the current. After a second or two, the capacitors are charged, and I connect the Dean's ultra connector for flight. The micro connector can stay plugged for flight. Nearly all the current is going to go through the ultra connector anyway. There is additional discussion of this on one of the RR forums.

Try this. Now can you see them? I forgot to click "Add Photo Cache" after I uploaded the pix. Sorry.

ignacj, not to worry.

Yes, the first time I heard it, I thought I was causing a tear in the fabric of space.

But now I have 100 flights on a 10s set-up using Dean's, and although there is some discoloration of the connector, there is no loss of function, or even approaching loss of function.

The "pop" is an incentive for you to learn to effect a clean "make." If you fumble around, you can hear two or three pops

But my Jazz ESC puts up with all of that, no problem..
