tail problems x 3
I went to local flying field yesterday to watch some friends and help out as I could. In the course of several hours, three helos went in due to tail problems.
Helo 1- HawK Pro. Bird was flying well and being thrashed a bit when it made the most God-aweful noise and started to piro. Pilot hit the hold button and did a faily decent auto. Helo bumped the ground pretty hard and tipped over. Damage wasn't too bad. Post crash inspection showed it had thrown a tailrotor blade!
Helo 2- Fury w/OS 70- This was my instuctors bird and hadn't been flown since the last time we went flying together in May. John was flying around realtively mildy because he had been working on it the day before due to excessive slop in the tail. He said it didn't "feel" right and was about to bring it back and land when the tail let go about 10 up. He landed hard while it piro'ed like crazy. Again, minor damage, but no appearent reason for the problem.
Helo 3- Predator w/ OS 70- This was the friend we went out to help. Ed was having tuning problems with engine and since his problems were similar to what I was having on my Freya (also OS 70) I wanted to see what could be done. After tweeking and retweeking, we filled the tank w/30% instead of 15% and the engine sounding like a sewing machine, SMOOTH! Ed had a grin that wouldn't quit and started doing some slow circuits. Without warning, the tail locked up, it flipped on it's side and startewd coming right at us. Ed managed to roll it up right, then on to it's other side so it going away from us when it hit. Damage was maderate this time, blade, main shaft, spindle and tail boom/horizontal fin. Again, no appearent reason for the failure.

It was a bad day for tails! On the plus side we were treated to some excellent flying by the other helo and plank pilots.

Yea we had some pretty bad carnage yesterday.

I blew a rod in my Raptor, emergency auto #1 for the day
Morican tipped his venture over in the dirt
A friend tore up a Raptor 90 because of a bad reciever battery.
A Stratus did the funky chicken because wrong model selected.
My EVO did an emergency (#2 for the day) auto cuz the clunk line fell off
The Raptor 90 guy almost lost a Stratus to a gyro problem
Fromme2u almost ditched his new EVO 50 because the radius block shifted
and Raif came within 10 feet of getting his clock cleaned by an out of control 1/4 scale cub, good job not ditching the heli he was flying at the time

Well, John discovered the cause of his problem after he got home, the tail servo died. He had the fury back up and flying this after noon. Now, we just need to figure out what happened to Ed's bird.
We took my Freya up this afternoon for it second flight. I changed a bunch of stuff since the first flight and it seemed to be flying pretty good, except for an intermittant glitch in the tail at higher head speeds. This one has us both puzzled. John took home with him so he could look into this deeper. After all the tail failures yesterday I think we are both a bit gun shy.
I did discover, both yesterday with Ed's bird and today with mine, that the OS 70 really likes 30% better than 15%. Even managed to get the Evo back in the air for the first time since the end of May. Surprise, I didn't forget which stick worked what!

Glad no one was hurt by that run-away Cub, but sorry you guys had so much trouble.
