CX & CP Pro - lipo charging
Folks,

Just received a used Blade CX with two stock lipo batteries. And was wondering about getting maybe a CP Pro later, which also has lipos. My questions here about lipos and charging are:

-1- the stock CX charger sure gets warm during charging, is that normal? Would a micro 1" PC fan help keep it cool / be a good modification?

-2- looking at a GreatPlanes Triton 3150 charger, for lipos and other batteries. Any concerns with a bigger charger on this little CX or the future CP Pro lipo packs?

-3- any good 'in the field - rapid charger' options to suggest, as the 1-2 hour charge time with the stock unit is a bit long to wait, I would think. Maybe back to the Triton unit?

I know there needs to be some down time, motor cool down time, but just curious on these questions.

curious,

-1- Nothing wrong with a fan mod IMO- Many chargers have built in fans.

-2- Triton charger will work fine with different brands/sizes of lipos.

-3- There is no safe quick charge option for these lipos - Buy more lipo packs to reduce down time.

The Triton charger is around $100 and will handle 1-4cell lipos with charging rates from 0.1 - 2.5A.

The BCPPro will come with a 3cell lipo charger/balancer that will only charge 3cell lipos at a fixed rate of 0.8A to match their 800mah 3cell packs that will also come with the BCPPro and will be similar to the CX charger you have now - They will sell for $23.

Another charger between those two is the Hobbico MK-II for around $50 that will charge 2 1-3cell lipos packs at once at a rate of up to 1.0A.

Another yet is the ElectriFly PolyCharge 4 for around $100 that is similar to the MK-II but will charge 4 packs at once.

Ok thanks, I guess that what you are saying is.... there really is no good "quick charge" for Lipos? So I could be limited to flight times at the field, based on how many battery packs I have.

The Blade CX I have with the Eflite Lipo charger, run off the AC adapter, seems to take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to recharge a battery. Is that normal? Just seems slow.

Guessing the Trition or Hobbico units will take almost the same time then to charge them?

A lithium dedicated charger, that can charge lithiums at the 1C rate will charge a depleted battery in an hour. that's the best you can get at the moment, although one of the guys at our field has a new thunderpower charger that supposedly can charge their newer packs at 2C.

The Triton is a bit slower than that as it ramps up the charge very slowly to the designated rate and drops off slowly at the end...typically up to an hour and 20 minutes for a depleted battery.

I have a Celectra that cost me about 40 bucks. It lets you pick a few popular charge rates with a switch, and has a 1/2/3-cell selector switch. You can charge aggressively if you like, but I'm not endorsing it. I didn't want my batteries to explode like the guys in that video.-fox

I'm surprised your stock cx charger is getting that hot. I have two of them and charge them using a 12v pc power supply. Neither gets more than a little warm.
