This was on the dyd website

Note: Any Attempt to copy the DYD Style, including the line over line candy fades, fades in the windshield, use of logos and the DaveYostDesigns trade mark logo and or font will be met with stiff legal recourse.

Or if you use the DYD logo or name. As for the other stuff, you cant copyright a style. The process maybe, but you can recreate a style using a different process. I wouldn't worry about it. If all you want to do is paint your own canopy I dint think you have anything to worry about."There is a fine line between cutting edge and bleeding edge.."

Here's the deal guys. Any individual who wants to paint their canopy can paint anything they want and use any manufacturer's logos they want. In fact, you may note that lately I have been providing advice on the night flying and paint forum. Anyone who needs assistance with painting can call or email/pm and I will give them all the advice I can to help them be successful.

Now, let's talk about the statement on my website. DYD has worked very hard to develop paint schemes that ARE different from the other canopy painters. In addition, we have spent a lot time modifying fonts and adjusting the size(not to mention printing costs) to create a logo that is our trademark. What we would not appreciate is someone scanning the logo, and inserting their name or company name in place of "Dave Yost Designs" with the same font. For instance, if I were to take the same font that Arizona Heli uses on their canopies, and insert "DaveYostDesigns" and then start painting canopies that look like his, it would not be fair to Bill and all of the hard work he has put in over the years to develop his product. Likewise, the line over line fade process is a stye that I developed and was using on helmets for years before I introduced it to the heli world on Marcus Kim's R90 canopy. What we are trying to prevent is a manufacturer taking one of our canopies overseas, getting it duplicated in mass quanity and inserting their name on the logo. This has already happened to several helmet painters. If you paint a Ferrari F1 Micheal Schumacher replica helment for your desk, it's your business. If you put it on Ebay however, you may get a nasty gram from Ferrari's legal department, and rightfully so, it's not your intellectual property and you are using it for your own financial gain.

I will take another look at the statement and maybe reword it to be a little more clear. It's not designed to scare away the average guy who just wants to put "Futaba" or any thing else for that matter on their windshield. Anyone who needs painting advice can call or email, I would be happy to help out.

Sorry for the confusion

Cheers, Dave.

I think your designs are very good but I don't understand this "line over line fade" is unique or how it is copyrightable? Do you have an example of it? I've seen the Marcus Kim canopy but didn't notice anything unique to the airbrush world? But I probably don't have an eye for it. I've seen some great paint jobs out there and they seem to be doing anything and everything with paint.

I care. That's why I asked the question. I invented a unique orange peel effect. Granted I wish I didn't have it down so well. But if I catch it on your heli I'll sue your ass.

What do you mean? What do you care what questions I ask? Are you the forum police? Ok, you don't care about it. We get it. So go read a conversation you do care about. We don't need to be updated on what questions you deem are worthy.

I understand that. But just know that I developed the technique of copying techniques out of Automotive Cheap Tricks and Special F/X and applying them to RC helicopter canopies. If you copy my technique of copying these techniques I'll be forced to sue your ass. I would hate to do it because I am sure you are a cool guy but I would go Johnny Cochran on your ass before you can say Von Dutch.

Unfortunately a paint technique or "final output" will be hard to copywrite. There is nothing proprietary about spraying paint onto a canopy or whatever.

As for the font, if the font is a specially developed font and belongs to DYD then it will not be possible to use without consent of the owner. Take a look at Porsche and their own developed proprietary font. You use it the wrong way and expect a call from their legal department. They are one of the most protective companies of their printed image. If the font is a standard font that was not developed for DYD then once again I would like to see that one hold up in court for a copywrite law suit.

At the same time I respect what DYD is saying.

Not on the east coast. It's dark and has been raining most of the day. I think I see what you are talking about. I'm not sure you can copyright that. You would probably have been better off treating it like the formula for coke rather then drawing attention to it. They do something similar on a larger scale in chapter 20 and on page 21 of cheap tricks. The blue line has a drop shadow as well as the green line in chapter 20. Page 21 shows a section of blue with fade and HOK logo with lines of other colors intersecting every which way. I'd like to see that on a canopy. I've seen plenty of windshield fades and even did one myself. So you don't want to try to claim that either. The aurora name faded into the windshield is cool but these guys take it to the next level:
