R30v2 Tail rotor assembly question
Guys,
I just put my machine back together (had to replace the boom) last night, and I noticed that the tail rotor shaft has some play in it. It moved left and right about 1/8" like it floats a little side to side. I don't remember it doing this before but I may have just over looked it.

Anyway is it suppose to have any play back there? The shaft is ok in the bearings it just seem like there should be a spacer between the pulley and the bearings on each side to get rid of some of this play. My R60 is rock solid back there but as you all know that has a shaft and not a belt. I was not sure if it was allowed to float because of the belt. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
C Herzog

OK, I'm a fool but here goes....I don't have it front of me right now either so please keep that in mind.

There is a left and a right side to the housing. When you open it up the right side has the shaft in it. All I did was loosen up the six bolts put the boom in place and tighten it all back up.

I've looked at the book a few times now and I've opened up the tail assembly twice since I noticed this. Can one of you be a little more detailed?

Thanks again.

the red tail pulley comes 5 pieces . #1red cap #2 redpulley #3 shaft #4 pin # 5 set screw

the pulley (red#2)has the hole in it for (#4)pin ,
the cap(red#1) has shoulders a short side and long side . the short side fits into the pulley
thats the only thing I can think of that would cause this. did you take the pulley apart?

if the pulley is assembled wrong then you WILL have 1/4 inch slop
in the tail .
carefully disassemble the tail and start over. (ALL THE WAY APART)
after it is apart then look carefully dry fit assembly untill you have found the problem, instead if you still cant find the problem then post it up what you have found so can try get this right for you.
Are you 100%sure that it was correct before boom replacement?
Are you 100%sure that there are no damaged components?

OK, I pulled it apart for the third time. Looking at page 12 in the book I have...

2 BK0047 tail housings.
2 HMV1150X bearings
1 HMY2-12 Pin
1 BK0050 Pulley
1 HME3-4B set screw
1 BK0053 Tail shaft

OK, I pushed the bearings into place. I then slide the pulley on the shaft with the hole for the pin on the side of the shaft opposite the tail rotor (the side with the set screw). Slide the pin in and then put the set screw in. If you put the two halves together with the shaft and pulley in place....there is about 1/8" play between the red pulley (BK0050) and the two bearings (HMV1150X).

I can't remember if this was the case the first time that I put all this together....I just noticed it when I was rebuilding the heli after a little wreck that just bent the boom a little.

I had some nylon washers on hand that are about 1/32" thick. I took both bearings out, placed the washers in the bearing opening and then put the bearings back in. I have about 1/32" of slop in it like this.

Went out and flew it this afternoon and it flew fine but I'm still unsure about the play that was there. I want it to be built right I just can't find what the problem is, if there is one.

Thanks,

o.k. the red pulley has 2 parts even though it seems to be one piece
when its together. the book is unclear on exactly how to assemble,it shows pic but verry small and blurry in my book
when they are apart one piece has gearteeth,
and the other has shoulders . You took everything apart that I see as you posted , but you didnt say anything about separating the tail
pulley(red) gear. I think your problem is in the gear itself.

bkoo50 tail pulley
bkoo51 pulley flange

the bkoo51 must have long shoulder side out.

Damn, I feel like a fool...That was it Matthew. Thanks!

I didn't even remember putting those two pieces together until I read what you wrote. I just went and pulled it apart once again and that's what I did, put it together backwards. So now I'm thinking....I've flown almost three gallons of fuel through this thing with all that slop in the rear! My gyro servo had to be working it's a-- off.

Thanks everyone for working with me on this...and Matthew, you da man!
