sony r1 has some shortcomings if you plan on shooting in RAW or continuous mode. Otherwise i hear is great....

canon 350 with 20mm lens is what we use and it also works great and that combo can be bought for under $1500

The R1 looks like a nice camera but I have to tell you, the Sony V3 takes amazing images. Not only that, it's at a good price point and you can buy a controller from Southern Balloon Works specifically for that camera to control on/off, shutter and zoom from your receiver. Makes for a very complete and light setup for shooting stills.

The R1 is a great camera. The quality is great and RAW does take time to write and if you plan to do RAW in continuous I will say it is SLOW. Aside of that the camera itself is proving to me to be a great setup for my underslung rig. Everything falls into the right spots for setup and the camera has good adjustability. DPReview comments on the lens itself as comparible to $1000 DSLR lenses alone.

Search under Sony R1. We have talked about the camera a little bit on here.

Worth the $$ if you ask me. I was using a DSC-W1 and the R1 just leaves the W1 in the dust and that camera worked pretty well for me.

Not to mention I have run prints up to 24x36 with GREAT clarity. In fact the business I sold that print to had two other prints the same size from a full scale aerial pilot and when I gave them the print they told me they didn't know how they were going to hang it with the other two prints because mine was so much better. Gotta love that.
