Advice on 30 to 50 conversion, PT.2/Long or Short Boom?
I downloaded the manual for the 30 to 50 conversion and it gives the option of staying with the short boom or using the longer 50 boom.
The manual states:
The Short-Boom Raptor 50 is excellent for fast 3-D hot dogging. You keep the stock Raptor 30 rotor blades and tail boom.

The Long-Boom Raptor 50 is fast and performs like a graceful FAI competition machine. It will do large loops and slow rolls beatifully.

Has anyone tried the 50 conversion and kept the short-boom setup? This hot dogging part sounds good to me with the benefit of just using shorter blades (less expensive).

I've seen some pretty hot doggin 3d with a standard 50. I know one thing for sure, I wouldn't run 550 blades on a 50 w/o a governor.Andy

I've been flying my (2) short boom & blade R30'S with OS .50 sized engines with no problem for about a year and some change now. I don't use govenors, I don't like them. You have to watch it coming into 0 degrees pitch around mid stick, because it will spool up FAST! I retard the throttle curves significantly around mid stick and i'm running 11 degress of pitch on top. I have damn near unlimited inverted climbing with NO bogging whatsoever. It just keeps going and going and going like that little bunny. I have had no problems. I'm running slighly less that's 90% throttle Make sure you change your gears

I would put the longer boom on it. The bird will fly much better with longer blades. Better as in tracks better through maneuvers, is more stable in general and becomes much more capable as far as autos go. I would still say that it's a far cry from being as soft as an FAI machine. The Hyper 50 makes so much power as it is that you'd be hard pressed to bog the head if you ran 11 -11 @ ~2000 rpm with 600s.- Ron Henry

Did you stick to the original gear ratio or the one in the conversion box?

To me having the short boom/blades could be like a sports car with a shorter wheel base; you'll be able to move around much more quickly, mover faster, doesn't that apply here with the helicopters?

That's a good way to describe a 50 with the Hyper 50 in it. A 30 sized machine with 30 sized blades and a 50 sized engine wouldn't be optimal, because you're not able to extract much more than 50 - 60% of what the engine has to offer. A 50 sized machine is anything but slow and will out perform a 30 sized machine with a 50 in it. It's the same reason that 90s fly better than 50s. The power/weight ratio gets better and better with the blade/wing loading becomes less as you move to bigger blades. I'd fit the longer boom and a set of 600s. Only then you'll really be able to the benefits of flying a 50.- Ron Henry
