Ack. I'm not much of a fan of the way you took up your slack on that antenna. I wouldn't think it would help your available radio range at all. I'm sure you could come up with a better solution that would allow it to "stretch out"

Also, I myself would put some tape on that receiver crystal. You wouldn't want that coming out and damaging those main blades

You must be crazy running that electron 6 in a 50 sized heli. One little glitch might take you out or someone around you. Your free to use what you want.. but you might consider a PCM receiver so you can set failsafes. Happy flying but just don't come to my field.

failsafes are overrated. I fly pcm myself because I don't want to deal with rf noise from the rotating/vibrating metal parts. But if you think that setting failsafes is going to help anything on a heli, you are mistaken. The only thing that would help you is the throttle cutoff, which most ESC's do when the RX loses signal anyway.

With PCM lockout, you have NO CONTROL. I'd go for a glitch over no control any day. I have had amazing range on the electron 6, and nothing but great glitch free opration. Winding it on a bobbin is the same thing that normally comes with this RX in the box (an antenna bobbin). I didn't have any place to secure it, so I just zipped it to the frame. You can count on a range test report as well, as this is something I do not normally do. The reason I am doing it has been stated over and over.
I have completed radio setup, test run the motor (not meshed with the main gear) inside and lined the pitch up.

The pitch can easily travel to +-15*, so you have to be extremely careful to manage the pitch in the radio to the recomended 9*. I have normal, idle1 and idle2 set up as well as hold/cut switches. She is ready to go. The lipo charged OK and everything is secure and nothing can get torn chopped or ripped up. I have tripple checked belt tightness, balanced the blades and the paddles, extensively checked the pitch for 2 hours and set up the throttle curves.

Here goes nothing!..
I will be taking it far from the city, powerlines, or anything that could possibly cause a signal glitch (including nearby mountains and land features). Trust me, I don't want it crashing either

I'd assume since you are in OC, that you visit Whittier Narrows? Been there a few times now

At least use a full sized FM receiver like Futaba 148DF or 127DF. They have much better filtering circuit than Electron. The only thing I would use Electron in would be a cheap foamie park flyer.

But I would rather have an out of control heli with throttle CUT OFF by PCM settings than one that's going crazy and flying toward a crowd of people at full speed. I want my heli to shutoff the motor immediately when glitched to minimize potential damages to bystandards. Like I have stated before, you always want to test any electric heli (with blades off) using a FM receiver before slapping on a PCM receiver. If you have internally induced interference (from bad electronics, bad plugs, or even bad bearings), nothing will save you.

Whittier Narrows is far from being in OC.

OK, everyone has their POV, but I'm not here to argue. OTher people who were using electron 6 receivers on their mikados at san fernando flying field were flying, while I was enjoying pcm lockout crashes. I have my reasoning. I Can afford any receiver I need, But I have faith in the hitec electron because I have used it in hornets and Trex 450's plenty of times with not a single receiver issue. The receiver I AM afraid of is the Futaba FP-R148DP 8ch micro PCM1024 rx that has not been friendly to me. I'm sorry, but my throttle didn't cut out, regardless of my failsafe settings when the lockout hit. The blades turn 90* and the heli dropped straight to the ground, rotor spooled from 40 feet up, 0 * pitch full RPM. That was not good. The whole time (3 seconds max) it took for this to happen, I was fighting the sticks trying to make it recover, but nothing. I don't fly at populated fields very often, so nobody is in danger. Everyone likes to make a big stink about everything on this dang forum

And OC is close.. I know lots of OC flyers that go there. Sorry if you don't, cause it's nice =)
Riverside county is great for flying fields however. It's full of them from here to Palm Springs

Didn't mean to be rude there Sorry if I got a bit offensive.

Well, The helicopter flew great! I'll upload some video in a minute. Although, I only flew for about a minute and a half cause you guys had me scared as hell about the rx thing
I think maybe the heli could actually use a bit more punchout in positive before I get wicked with it. I'll try 100% throttle next flight. I may replace the rx too before I fly it again just so I don't have to think about if it is going to work or not. The motor did warm up some. I first flew in normal mode but the rpm's were a bit low with my adjustments, so I set it back down and went to idle1 at 80% throttle and +-9* pitch. Video coming right up. Note that the wind was approaching 20mph today..

Should be up in a few minutes..
Go easy on me, it's my first flight on this thing. No expo, TT 550's,
16C 22.2v 4200mah lipo and everything else shown in the assembly above.
Tail stuck in place perfect at a starting gain on 80%. Still have some more adjustments to take care of and I'll try idle 2 next =D
Range check performed farther away than I Wanted to walk.
20mph winds in the video. The heli didn't even notice a breeze of it.
The servos seem to get the job done too.
More videos will definatley follow. I'll try to make them a bit more interesting next time

Charger says I only put back half an amp into the battery. I got it a bit more trimmed up now for basic 3D. I'll see if I can get some rolls and loops on film with it tomorrow. Dunno if I'm gonna buy a new rx or not yet..

cameraman
Dude, your cameraman sucks. I wanted to punch my monitor. Looks pretty stable though, climbout would look decent if you were at a mile high, but I would say that it is a little sluggish for being less than 1000ft. Thanks for the vid. Keep em comin' That is pretty good that you only put 500 mah's into it. About ~ 2 mins of flight , so flying relaxed you might get 15 mins or so out of it. In hard 3d maybe 10-11. Just totally guessing obviously, so let us know what you are averaging for flight times as soon as you get some more time logged. Hopefully you have more than one batt. I am jealous!!!

The pitch climbout is a bit more impressive in person. Video never does anything justice. She'll have more punch when I kick the juice up some.
I may be a hair lower than 9 on the positive pitch too. I have to go over the heli and double check everything before I spool it up again. I Think she will do nicer than I expect.

Wow, guess I was way off, either he wasn't running a very high headspeed or not putting much load on the motor. Either way, 6 or 7 mins or hard 3d is about all my nerves can handle anyway.

So do I Want the Thunder power cell balancer or the align one? I will pick one up tomorrow. I gave the lipo it's first charge on my astroflight Lithium 101 charger (1-9S up to 8000mah). I should probably balance the cells before I go charging it anymore. (another reason I only flew it for a minute)
