On 30% fuel with an Hatori SB50 you can run a Hyper at 2 turns open and it makes good power and will break in correctly.

I don't understand why you would try the manual settings when it is so much easier to open it up and sneak up on the correct setting. I have a feeling that the 1.5 turn recommendation is at Sea Level, not at altitude.

Actually if you read the hyper manual correctly it states that you should break in the engine a 1 1/2 turns open from the "normal" setting. In the manual it states that 1 1/2 turns open is about "normal". So what OS is saying is to break in the engine at 3 turns open on the main needle valve. Read the manual carefully and you will see what I am saying.George Matthews

Well they are making a contradictory statement then. It states slightly rich not excessively rich, also only a very short and simple running-in is required. Something was probably not translated just right. ChrisChris

Have you tried to run a Hyper at 3 turns open?
In my experience 3 turns is not "excessively" rich.
Here is what it (OS) has to say in the manual.
Page 18. under starting "2. Open the needle valve 1.5 turns."
Page 20. under RUNNING-IN ("Breaking-in" "About 1.5 turn open from the normal setting will usually suffice".
Now of course there are many variables to these guidelines such as fuel, muffler, humidity, ambient air temp, elevation. But if you go by what the manual reads then you will have a good starting point.

This will just show how differences in conditions effect engine tuning, here in the UK and 400'ASL an OS 50 hyper wont even run at 3 turns out because its far to rich.Re-entering the atmosphere...

aloha all, here at sea level 1.5 turns out aint enough for beak-in. 2-2 1/4 turns is good for break-in, thats just my opinion. hawaii weather that is
