430L Motor gets way hot!!!
after about 15 minutes of flying, the motor gets way hot, I'm using an 11t pinion, 60% throttle, very low pitch (2-3 degrees) and very light flying. I switched from the helimax 6pole motor to the 430L thinking it wouldnt get as hot but I think it might be worse! after flying for 10-15 min, I have to stop for 20 to let it cool down. the battery stays nice and cool, no problem there. yesterday in mid flight it just crapped out on me! I had a lesson in autorotation. after it cooled i was fliyin again. Any Ideas?

Your throttle is too low, so is your pitch, and flying way too long

You need to change your setup... You should only get about 7 to 8 minutes out of a 2100 3S battery and run about a 80% throttle for hovering not 60%!!!!! You are going to kill your battery flying that long!!! You should only be putting back in your battery pack about 1500 to 1650mAh when charging or about 80%....I bet your helicopter head linkage is all wrong!!!!! **Now doing Forward Flight And EASY 3d! And having a Ball !!**

had the same problem. I was overheating the motor and using 4 cells.
Go to a lower pinion. Less heat on the motor. also, run 3 cells (if you are using 4). Mine was hitting 3190rpm at 60% throttle and causing the cut out problem you describe above. Waaaaaaaaaay too much heat. first thing to keep your motor cooler is always drop a pinion size! That is immeadiatley less pain for the motor to put up with. Think of it like switching to easy gear on a 10 speed bike so you can climb a hill. You'd be hot as hell in the biggest gear climbing a hill too!

Whoa??!! go easy on me. Did I mention I have no other problems, smoothest it has ever flown. in fact the darn thing practicly flys itself!! how could linkages cause the motor to overheat? I thought of giving it more RPMs, that maybe brushless motors are more efficient at the higher range of RPM, but more pitch? wouldnt that be more load on the motor? I dont want to question you guys but I like to know why I'm changing something. any way the advise about the flying time makes sense. but please clarify on the motor speed and pitch. Thanks.Frankenheli

You don't mention what pinion you are using, or the head speed you are achieving. That might help diagnose your problem.

D'oh -- I just looked at your original post and there it is, 11-tooth pinion! Guess I need to read more carefully.

As others suggested, you need to goose up the throttle setting from that 60% up to at least 80%. You'll pick up head RPM, get shorter flight times, but the motor should be much happier and run cooler.

and at the higher headspeed, you can flatten the pitch and take even more load off the motor.A helicopter is 10,000 parts spinning rapidly around an oil leak.

I think that did it, I havent tried the smaller pinion but just changing the throttle curve seems to have helped. its getting a little windy here so I will report back in a few days.Frankenheli

Right now is Summer, I live in New York, 90 degree all the time and the motor is running twice as hot as spring and Winter, so is the flight is much shorter due to resistance from Heat.

True, but after 20 or minutes it does cool down. 90 degrees is nothing, this thing melts your skin to it! Like I said in the last post it is better.Frankenheli

Then Check, the Belt tension, and Main gear meshing with the motor. If you spin the main rotor, the blade should come to a smooth stop and if you spin the main gear the direction that doesn't turn the main blade the main grear should spin somewhat free. Then the last thing spay WD40 on belt. 430L runs on the cool side, should be hot.

Are you using a Heat Sink on the motor? And 11T pinion is as small as you want to go... Just try flying or hovering for 6 to 7 minutes with that setup... Oh you could take off your cabin.... When hovering,, the down wash from main blades will help keep things cooler... I run the same motor with 11T pinion in my bird and after 7 minutes of forward flight ( takes less power when flying then hovering ) I can hold my hand on my motor with out to much trouble...**Now doing Forward Flight And EASY 3d! I just want to thank everyone who responded, It was all great advise. It is defininetly better, I increased the rpm so when its hovering its about 80% (its very squirly now but I'll get used to it) Yes I do have a heatsink I wonder how hot it would run without that!Frankenheli
