I just know I'm going to piss someone off, but.........

C'mon, Howard Hughes....Let's see if the "Spruce Goose" is up to the challenge!

Someone better do it or Dakine is going to buy one (or three) and go for the prize himself even though he's a contributor!

Yes, he IS that crazy!

John: Many of us did NOT miss the intention of your post and it IS definitely appreciated....HONEST!

But, the can of worms is now oficially open

Honestly, when I read John's initial post, I thought he was using a Voyager 50 Electric with underslung mount. Did I miss something? Where did the front mount issue come in to play?

this is great, but, if we are going to demand 25min flight time, then you need to give the option of the v50 front mount as the heli. yea, john was flying the v50 with m130, but, nowhere that i can see does it say that the v50 with m1 30 can stay aloft 25min...only the v50 ftont mount has that claim, and even then its "20 to 25 min" according to the website....so im assuming 25min is under absolute ideal conditions (low air temp, expert pilot, light breeze...if you want anyone to actually take up this challenge, then we need to stick to what has been claimed and not add further stipulations.....even so, i think that would be impressive for an electric camera ship of anykind to stay up for 25min under the best of conditions. i wouldnt be concerned with what camera or downlink is used, just keep the weight to the weight stated on the website.www.skypiximaging.com

Can I have 2650 bucks if my old (Airfoil) Xell can stay aloft for 25 minutes?

Thats a 12lb heli with 7lbs of gear and the(puny)stock tank.

hey, it's worth a shot ain't it?

Danno, I got the info from John's post:
So we are all clear I was flying an under slung light weight 30 mount on backwards. I personally hate front mount's! I would havebeen tail first in the wind which also burns battery power and the underslung mount is easier to see/use/ and to reverse!
It uses 6000mah Pro Lite pack and it will generally under normal conditions fly's 25 mins. I really thought I had 5 minutes left but it wasn't there. 8.0lbs RTF with the Sony DSC-V3 7.2 meg pixel.

I wish you guys that don't think you can fly for 25 minutes would have been there. I use a normal throttle curve like a gasser but with the lift from the lake I flew about 2 or 3 clicks under half throttle and with 4 degrees negative would pull it all the way back to desend.

I didn't think anyone would think I would be flying a front mount!

Yes we sell one but I personally hate them. You can't see the front mount heli's that well at altitudes and you have no way to reverse the mount. We were flying the V50Electric which is the Venture but I use the M1-30 mount. Yes it adds a little weight so we have to cut every oz. but I can reverse it to let the heli face into the wind and glide. The underslung mount makes the heli a lot more stable than the front mount as it just tends to always hover.

We never edit or hide anything and yes put 9.0lbs. on two fun noodles 16" long and see if it floats. It does.

Matt put the beer down and step away from the computer! I'm so busy I ship you a new fuel tank for the GSR and you have our electric. No time to play!

I guess I would have to say yes you missed something. John does not mention any underslung mount in his first post, Just the v50 electric, so I don't see how you thought it was an underslung mount.

Hit refresh a couple of times on the RR aerial photography forum and watch an airfoil add come up with 3 images of a front mount v50 with the following text next to the front mount.

"This heli was designed around JR's proven Venture 50 to be a one man operation and operate on only one Lipo 5 cell battery pack, to keep the weight and expense down. The Camera mount is vibration isolated in 7 places to eliminate vibrations for clear photos every time.

more information today!!"

If you click on the link in the add as shown below, what do you see?

http://www.airfoilskycam.com/voyager50.php

A front mount v50. This is the only v50 that I can find on airfoils site, and the only one they advertise.

Maybe I should buy a V50 from John and do the test myself?

Costly but it would be fun

John,

Could that V50 lift your new Pro Mount? If so, I'd like to order one.

How much does the Pro Mount weigh? Could a Maxi lift the new Pro Mount?

You know me, I've got to own and test everything available. I'm a helicopter and mount hore

I shoot Canon and Nikon.

I drive a Chevy but push my Ford

Tony, I will follow up with those numbers in the morning. I am flying a pro mount on a Maxi2 Plenybig combo and the HC1 KS2 and the end result is off the chart! Eight min. flights are the only downside.

More to follow.

Tony (aambrose) - I hear ya. No one who does this knows if they even are legit as far as the stills or the vids they shoot. I'm *guessing* here but I'd bet that what I've seen is not post edited for stability. Just my gut feeling. I don't think DJ was blowing smoke.. I know I can smooth my r50 out WAY smoother than I could with my gasser. Add to that an ideal flying condition (ie no/low wind) and you've got your smooth as glass video. I KNOW it's not rocket science. I gave up on gassers too because of the issues and the ridiculous cost to keep it flying when it decided it didn't want to fly anymore.. I TRUST my other machines, I DON'T trust a gasser. No offense to the maker, it's just a wild untamed beast and until the powerplant can be smoothed out (I had a Hanson motor too).. my dollar will be spent on electrons/nitro.

Man this thread went WAY off. I like it! Shoot, John, you didn't even post a pic of it floating upside down!!! Shame! At least we could have enjoyed that!

I'm the opposite here. 4 years and counting same airframe/motor/blades. Although getting a gas motor broken in can be a pain. Had a Hanson on one, broke, only motor I ever killed in a heli.

I'm not sure if a strong headwind would really help much. I can do 25 minutes with a heli. mind if I take it to a local slope, to get some slope lift? :P For 2600 bucks, I'm tempting on going to this. I'd try this with my raptor, but I don't have any 5s packs, nor do I have a motor with a high enough kv. 90 percent of your pack is good, but that would really reck your packs long term. What motor does this puppy use?Rhett..... I can't fly, but the Profi sure can.

We did fly from that point and got several shots but for the shot for the cover of the magazine we didn't want anything out there. You would have been able to see us standing there and I didn't want that.

This is the shot that made the cover. We are at the end of the covered dock so we don't clutter the picture.

Thanks

Food for thought.

I fly with myself in the picture all the time if it is a good vantage point, then just photoshop myself out with a little clone tool.

I am even ususally much closer in than your shot is, so at the altitude you're flying at, and the size of the space by the pool with all that grass, you could very quickly and easily photoshop yourself out, and no one would EVER be able to tell.

Would save a lot of setup time moving around on the site, especially if you were already setup and shooting from there in the first place, and might have even saved your heli in this case.

If you make a conscious decision to know you're going to photoshop yourself out, just be aware of where you are or what you're standing on so you can easily clone yourself out. Don't stand half on cement, half on grass or something like that as you'll have to do a better job in photoshop and replace an edge or something. Stand completely on the same surface and don't block any background so you can easliy zap yourself from the picture.

Yes I could photo shop about anything but we had 11 shoots to do that Sunday and they needed the pics on a disc when we were done so they could turn them in for the Monday deadline. We were a month late on these jobs so I tried to shoot the shot and stay out of it.

We just got way over booked. I had to shoot these solo or I would have just had the GSR and brought the pics back adjusted them and sent them the CD. This was a 8 hour shooting day to get everything done 3 hours from our business.

Off the subject but this thread hasbeen before. I run the Sorm Team also. This is a pic we will use in the promo of a 40,000ft thunder head lit up by lightning. We got some very good shots last night.

Hope you like.

Cool shot, John!

I don't know how comfortable I would be holding a transmitter with an extended antenna when there's lightning nearby
