$100 T-Rex Heli Cam

I found this helmet camera in the catalogue of a local camera store near me, and for $100, so I had to try it out. It's an Oregon Scientific ATC-1000. The video resolution is only 640 x 480 at 15 fps, but for just playing around with to watch on a computer, I think it’s fine. It runs on 4 AAA batteries, and records straight to an SD memory card.
I was surprised my T-Rex took off so easily with it. I just attached it with some zip-ties for now. I want to try some loops and rolls with it, but I may have to strap it to on of my larger helis for that.
I have a test video, but it’s almost 40 megs, can anyone tell me where I can upload videos that are too large for here?

Nice. I decided to see if my Trex could hual my Fuji 6900z the other day. It wouldn't get off the ground, then all of a sudden, it jumped up -- I had forgot about the pitch curves. Didn't damage it on the hard, 1' landing, though.

I would have played around with it some more, but making a stand and mount was half the problem. This looks like an easy way to have some fun.

I can host the video for you if you would like to mail me a cd with the file. I'm looking at this cam as well and would love to put the footage up to help everybody out! Thanks.

I've got a video on putfile.
Fair playback, and costs nothing. 25 mbs.

How long are you finding that the batteries last?

I bought one of these (I had to import it to the UK) and was a little disappointed by the video quality, but its fun, cheap and easy to use so I can't complain.

But what is a worry is that it shuts down after a total of approx 40 mins on a set of batteries.. Weirdly, the batteries still seem to be OK when I take them out and test them, but the ATC-1000 doesn't like them once they get in this state.. It looks like its a bit too sensitive to the voltage drop.

How have you found the batteries?

I've only used the camera about 4 times for a total of about 15 min. It hasn't warmed up enough for me yet, so I haven't really gotten out much to fly.
If regular batteries are only lasting about 40 min, I would suggest buying the lithium AAA batteries that they sell for digital cameras. I've seen some that say they last 7 times longer then regular batteries, so they should give you much more stamina.
Do you have any good videos yet? If you do, post them.

Unfortunatly, I only fly a Hummingbird (badly) and I don't think that it has enough lift to carry the camera.

I bought mine for my other hobbies (Off Road Motorbikes, Kite Bugging and Go-Karting).. But so far, my results have been disappointing!

From what I have heard, the Tony Hawks one isn't upto much.. Whilst it claimes to do 640x480, it only does this when directly connected to a PC, so it bascially acts as a web cam. When its in 'standalone mode' it only does 320x200..

Given that the ATC-1000 (which works at 640x480) is not up to much, I can't imagine that the Tony Hawks one (at 320x200) is up to much!

Any of you guys using this ATC-1000 found a place to post sample videos yet? I'd really like to see examples of the quality.op-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-t

Try these.. They aren't anything to do with Helicopters, but will give you an idea how good/bad the video is! You need to get the files quickly, as the FTP server purges/deletes every few days.

These are of a couple of laps in my Go-Kart!

I should have said.. Those files are 20-25m each.. So, beware of your bandwidth, should you decide to download them.

Thanks for those samples. Not bad at all. I imagine some windsock foam would lessen the wind noise in the micop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-thwop-t

I have tried everything to reduce the wind noise and given up.. Even when I blocked up the mic with some 'blue-tac', it still makes the same noise... The main problem is that there isn't much room.. THe mic is directly above the lens on the front face..

I could give some foam a try, but I don't give it much hope.

If you still get wind noise with tape over the opening then maybe the case has some air passing through it somewhere else. Was it mounted to your helmet with the stock mount? What do you guess your top speed was on that course?

I expect one tomorrow. I'll experiment when it gets here.

The top speed on that track is about 48mph.. But as you heard, the wind noise starts as soon as you get moving.

At the weekend, I went out on my motorbike and the completely blocked up the mic, but I still got wind noise!

I havn't used the standard mount yet.. I made this instead:

Mine arrived. Testing begins.

Looks like even with the mic hole blocked air can get into the case around the flat glass lense protector just inside the front of the case. That'll be a tough one to block if that's the culprit.
