Bloated Lipo needs to go on a diet!
So my friend brought over his lipo today...

And something looked very peculiar about his lipo (on the right) compared to mine (on the left).

Maybe its time to go on a diet..................... or call Hazmat?

Dagern: Looks like it's about to explode!
I think you're right Dagern.
Are you suggesting that I call the bomb squad instead?

From a different angle.

The sad thing is, the pack has a Manufactured date of late January 2006!
AND it has never even been flown with!

Man that's insane!! I'm really starting to get freaked about switching to electrics and dealing with lipos!! I'm almost debating whether to fix my Rap 50 and buy a Zagi with the leftovers instead of a TRex. The only thing that's holding me back is I like the fact that I can take the Rex with me when I go on TDY trips. Ugh.. decisions, decisions!Remember when flying inverted that down is up and up is EXPENSIVE!

That's a darn shame. One of the reasons why I don't leave the room when they are charging. Don't understand why that would happen to a new battery.

Over charging can cause it, or your charger detected the wrong amount of cells and overcharging. There seems to be more and more of this kind of thing happening now they are becoming more popular but shouldn't really be an issue if you keep your eye on the battery while it's charging and touching it to make sure it doesn't get too hot. At least that way you can stop it from getting anywhere near that size.

Question is, what do you do with it now? you can't through it in the bin. Pop it and it will explode.

Assuming that I decide that I will only ever "trickle charge" a lipo (I need some for my Trex) , will I still get the same performance ? I know that with nicads and nimh you don't get the same "punch" out of a trickle charged pack as a fast charged one , but does the same apply to lipos ?At the end of the day , it gets dark .

Makes no difference with a Lipo as far as I've seen especially when you consider the max rate of charge for most is 1C so it's hardly a fast charge.

You don't need to trickle charge them just charge at the correct rate and make sure the charger has the cell count set properly.

Would charging a pack at a C/10 rate , obviously with a lipo charger ,
not be trickle charging ?

You should get rid or that quick and do the salt bath, they are volatile and can do some serious damage. I would save the connector, one wire at a time and then get rid of it properly.Stuff like that is damaging in an argument with the wife..."You almost blew up the house, I saw the exploding lipo-video !!! Get rid of those helis!!!" Hard to come back from that one.

From what I've read , you should discharge the pack by placing a small load on it , then puncture the pack and soak it in salt water for several hours .At the end of the day , it gets dark .

Note that if you puncture a charged pack that is blotted like that, it will burst into flames. We did it at the field the other day. It isn't something you want to do.

Mind you, there wasn't enough of the pack left after the little fire to put in the bin, so there goes the disposal problem
