Before putting my hard earned cash on the Stratus, I'll like to find out has MA sorted out all the issue on this kit. I believe those waiting to get the Stratus will like to know too. There is suppose to have a new fuel tank and a new engine mount plate for the new OS91-SZH. How do I know that the kit I'm getting comes with the new tank and not the older version? At this moment, the new engine mount plate is a separate part that you have to buy and not a standard item that is included in the kit. Anything else that I miss out?

According to the MA homepage, the Stratus comes in 4 different kits with different gearing ratio. With 8.18 and 8.45 made for 3D flying for OS and YS engines respectively. There are 2 more configurations that are cater to FAI flying. For these two, besides the different in gear ratio, any other things that set them apart from the 3D kits. For example the head, which is what we're seeing in the Tempest 3D and FAI kits?

If only the Stratus comes in one single kit with all different gear ratios then I won't had a hard time deciding whether to go for the one with OS or YS? Can anyone tell me why you prefer OS to YS, or the vice versa. I'm not going for the extreme hard 3D flying but I do want to do some mild acrobatic flying, should I go for the FAI kit or the 3D one?

Regards

stratus 3D with YS ofcourse
Dear friend,

I don't want to sound biased but the Stratus 3D with Tempest head is the best heli-engine combination I've ever flown.

To answer your question in more details there are 5 gear ratios available for Stratus and these are 7.75 7.91 8.18 8.45 and 9.30. It is a difficult choice I know but usually with YS engines the 7.75 ratio is suitable for FAI flying and 8.45 for 3D flying. I don't know why exactly this is but I want to point one thing out to you: I have both the fury FAI kit (7.75 gear ratio) and the stratus (8.45 gear ratio) and the stratus with this engine gear combination is amazing. It is rock steady in hover but agile as well. Of course in order to achieve that I use this amazing head developed by MA called the TEMPEST head. The FAI kit is very steady as well but is not as agile. However on the other hand the fact also is that with the 7.75 gear ratio and with the same YS91st engine the fuel economy is around 30%-40%. With the 3D I have a flight time of 15mins and with the FAI 22mins. This is because of lower engine revs for a head spin of 1800rpm. I use coolpower 30% fuel.

If MA was to put in the same kit all possible gear ratio combinations the cost of the kits would be very very high and this is because you would need all possible combinations of PINION GEARS, MAIN GEARS and SIDE FRAME alignment plates.

As far as the engines are concerned I think YS is a very well developed engine for this kind of applications. The OS engines have a range of engines at the 90 size (with pump, without, blue heat sink, gold heat sink, gray heat sink) which I don't really understand why these versions exist. My close friend Alex who's flying the same helis as I am and but with OS engines has never had a smooth day with his engine. He constantly needs to calibrate it to get the most out of it. My opinion is that the YS engines are more reliable, easier to adjust and deliver amazing power. However I've heard alot of good words for the NEW OS91sz-h which I have to say I cannot speak for. It could be that OS has done alot of good work on it since it was used in the world championships as well.

To sum up stratus 3D is amazing, YS91st is fantastic and I think the combination of these two things is very very very good.

Good luck with your choice

Recently, I just bought a NIB TSK Mystar60V2 with CF. Felt that it is too good a deal to miss. So in the meantime, the Stratus will have to put on the waiting list. Guess this'll allow me more time to think over which kit to get and to find out how the performance of the new OS91-SZH on the Stratus.

Hi Sookainian,
I stay in Hougang area. Would love to see your Stratus . Care to show us some pictures of your new 'bird'? When you got your heli buildup, let me know how the new OS91-SZH performs on the Stratus? I guess you must be the very first guy in the whole S'pore with a Stratus. I never see any locals flying MA in our country.

Sookainian,
For me, I only fly at Tampines because there is a direct bus there. Got no vehicle so not quite convenient for me to get to Yishun or Woodlands on public transports. I never fly MA heli before. That's why I'll like to get one to try out. Currently, I'm flying a Raptor30V1 and T-rex. Never tried any heli bigger than 30 size before but I do have a Freya Evo90 and a newly purchase Mystar60V2. Sorry, I have no msn. You can still get me on wizard_de_weird@hotmail.com

ok, my Stratus is nearly up for flight, just need a starter shaft and a new engine mounting, setting all done i think. Mb i will get a Governer and add in.

I got a R50V2, R90SE and Stratus. If u want to talk about which heli is heavier, the Stratus is 100% lighter then the R90SE.

But the bad thing about stratus is, u need a new starter shaft which will cost u $100 =X thats all i think.

When are u flying at tampines ? are u a member in DH too ?

Most probably I won't be flying in the next couple of weeks. Something is not very right with the TT engine in my Raptor. And I don't really have much time to take it out and do a total overhaul. But do let me know when you're flying your Stratus, I can still spare one or two hours to go down to watch you flying.. Yes, I'm a member of DH.
Btw, what so different about that starter shaft that you need to pay $100 for it??

Electronics on Stratus

What are the electronics setup on your Stratus? Maybe I can use it as a reference when I got mine.
