My trex had a crash early in its carreer thanks to the stock align motor coming apart in flight.... It has flown every since with about half a head button.. So, who can tell me what the heck the thing is for? all helis seem to have one so there is obviusly some aerodynamic reason for its existance...does it direct airflow out to the blades or what? and if I get a replacement will I notice a diff. in flight? One side of the dome had snapped on mine so I dremaled all the way around it so it looked to balance but no dome on top...So who is the flight engineer in the crowd......

I've heard of folks forgetting to loctite it on and flying endlessly afterwards without it.

If you want to scrub/rub the ground, then it is used for that too, but thats the 2% of guys crazy and skilled enough to do it. With half of one, does it make the head wobble?

Yes, some full size helicopters have what looks like a rotor button. It is a cover for the mast. Some full size helicopters (like the UH-60 BlackHawk) have wires and stuff running up inside the mast for things like rotor blade de-ice systems.

No wobble. I ground the rest off into some form of symetry until there is only a small peice with the screw going through and into the rotor head.... flys well but as finless said I guess it serves no purpose that has to due with flying and by the way I am trying hard enough not to scrub the ground while right side up I don't think I feel the need to invert and due it with the button!!!!!!!

I think the function of the button is for you to stop the rotation of the blades during spool down. I put my palm on it to make the blades stop faster.

The headbutton is not for scraping, lol. It is for stopping the rotor after your flight on spooldown "as mentioned". You arc yourself over the rotor and put down your palm on the headbutton to speed up stopping the momentum on the disc.

There are ones you can get that serve no purpose other than looks. On the t-rex the headbutton really serves no purpose as the disc is so small and it stops so quick.

Here is a Dream RC Headbutton on my T-Rex, they are kind of cool.

Here are some more, these are on my Evo

...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

On the T-Rex it also keeps you from reversing the blade grips accidentally when you have the links off .

UH... that head button looks like I could lose a finger if not my whole hand, if I tried to spool down with that thing!!

Is Dream RC still selling some headbuttons?? I couldn't find their website.

Thanks

Remember when flying inverted that down is up and up is EXPENSIVE!

Oh yeah, Michael's still very much in business and produces some of the nicest head buttons in the industry. Here's his link:

http://dreamrcheli.com/

He also makes different styles for the T-REXs too.

It's mainly for stopping the blades...we all know that, but it has other purposes like cosmetics and the occasional scrub. I saw a video of Szabo doing it with a 90 and you could hear it scrub over the engine...amazing. I think that I would need to do that sitting down as my legs would most likely give out on me.

i wonder if it would be possible to make a head button out of the stuff (unsure what it is !) that motorbikers use on there knees to produce sparks when they go around corners
a sparking inverted heli scrubbibg the deck would look fairly cool in dim light !!!!
wonder if it would work ? lol

If you need to get high , go and fly !
