MX400
JGF 450th
Align 35A esc
JR 500t gyro
HS56's
DX6 with receiver

I am running a stretched version turning 335 T-Rex wood blades. I think I am going to switch to the T-Rex 325 wood composite blades (gray and yellow ones). I also have a set of Carbon blades but just got them to experiment with. Ultimately I would like to continue running a high performance low cost blade.
The MX400 in its stock form is not very good. For this thing to fly like I wanted all the upgrades you see were needed minus the metal bearing blocks and painted fiberglass canopy. I got those for the hell of it.

That is a beautiful, beautiful, blinging bird.

I have the aluminum washout control and mixing sets on the way. I also have a stock trex tail slider on the way as well. Just augered in and using the crash for an excuse to finish off my upgrades. Cant wait! Never been this happy to have a crash.

Currently, I only have the aluminum center hub and eccpm. I heard that you can get more collective through with the aluminum arms so they are now on the way. I chose the x400 for the aluminum frames but I do like the trex head better. I hope the metal stuff makes the difference. If not, I may switch to a trex head.

Did those upgrades tighten up your head? My problem is with that flybar rocker and the screws that run into it. That thing is my largest source of play and I am hoping that the aluminum will solve it.

Yes, the metal upgrades eliminated all the play. I am very happy with my current setup. I originally bought the MX400 because it had metal frames and the local hobby store guy wanted to get rid of it for a song and a dance. If I had it to do over again I would get the T-Rex SE which were my original plans anyway.

They fit fine but were crap for servos. I pulled them out and now am running HS56 servos all the way around.

Greg,

Did you paint the canopy or did it come pre-painted? If you painted it, what paint did you use and what preparation work was done to the canopy?

The canopy was prepainted. I added some decals to it. I did paint the tail fins to match. I used Krylon flourescent paint in a rattle can. I roughed up the fins with some fine grit sandpaper, cleaned them with alcohol, sprayed with adhesion promotor and then the final coats with the Krylon and baked them in the oven at 200 degrees for 15 minutes. I don't know how they will hold up long term but they look good now.

which pinion size are you running on that motor, in a t-rex a 13t but the ark has a smaller main gear so bigger gear? like 15t?

A 12 tooth pinion will give you a lower headspeed and a 15 tooth pinion will give you a higher headspeed. The 450TH on the ARK with a 13 tooth pionion will be almost like running a 14 tooth on the T-Rex with the same motor. Currently I am running a 13 tooth pinion but I have on order a 12 tooth pinion. My headspeed right now is around 2800-3000. I think I will be happier with it around 2600 that is why I am going to try the 12 tooth. Hope this answers your question.

The aluminum case seems to meet all my needs. It is well built and fits the heli nicely. I put the heli and stuff in there and shake it up then open and everything is still in its place. Granted I don't do this everytime as that would make me a little anal but I did do it for the first trial fitting. I cut some slots under where the canopy lays and that is where I store my Thunder Power Charger and Balancer you can see them in the picture below as half inch strips of aluminum to the right of the transmitter. They seat a little lower than the foam so the heli doesn't rub them.

By the way make sure you shop around for the best price. I got mine from allerc.com for $64.95 pluss $5.00 for shipping. They have a note that additional shipping charges are required but if you pay with paypal at the time of checkout they can't charge the additional rate and the flat rate is the default charge. I will look for a link.
Here you go best price on the net I have found.

The MX400 has been flying great with no major issues. But, I have had blade tracking problems with it from the beginning. I have tried 4 different sets of blades. The originals, Align 335's (two sets), and carbon. The carbons initially tracked the best but with a little flying came back out of track. My solution: I just purchased the T-Rex blade grips and spindle. I think this will solve my problems. I will report back with my findings.
